Can Moonshine Go Bad?
Throughout this brief post, we will address the subject of “can moonshine go bad?” and present a solution. as well as the storage recommendations
Can moonshine go bad?
No, moonshine, like other basic spirits, never actually matures in the traditional sense. It is a classic beverage that has stood the test of time. The result is that moonshine has an indefinite shelf life, at least until it is flavored, at which point its high sugar content causes it to decay as a result of the high alcohol concentration.
How long can moonshine be kept in a bottle?
You won’t have to be concerned with whether or not your moonshine is still good 99 percent of the time when you use this method. Why? Because most moonshines have an unlimited shelf life, they will never spoil even if they are left unopened for a lengthy period of time, as long as they are stored properly. It is, in reality, really simple. A highly distilled liquor, moonshine differs from the vast majority of other alcoholic beverages in that it is extremely concentrated. After distillation, moonshines no longer contain any sugars, and as a result, they are incapable of degrading.
Despite the fact that these moonshines may be stored for an extended period of time, their quality will deteriorate with time, so consume them as soon as possible.
When making moonshine, it is distilled until no sugar is present in the mixture. This ensures that the spirit is shelf-stable and can be stored for an indefinite period of time if left unopened. Moonshine is made in the same way as other simple spirits such as rum, whiskey, brandy (including gin and vodka), and vodka. In spite of the fact that the presence of air may induce changes in the properties of moonshine and even evaporation, moonshine will not deteriorate or expire, in contrast to fresh food and even good wines.
Moonshine with a Variety of Flavors
Once opened, it is more probable that moonshine containing additional sweets, such as the well-known apple pie moonshine, may degrade sooner than other moonshine varieties. However, it will still take a significant amount of time before it spoils completely (i.e., several years). However, even while Midnight Moon claims that the alcohol in their goods helps to keep fruits fresher for longer periods of time, the firm recommends against eating the fruit because it may include more alcohol than is expected by the consumer.
Is it true that aged moonshine becomes better with age?
With age, certain alcoholic beverages, such as wine, have the potential to increase significantly in quality and complexity. In light of this, moonshiners ask if aging their product for an extended period of time would also increase the quality of their spirits in the long run. Barrel-aged wines and other alcoholic drinks are stored in oak barrels, which allow the scent and flavor of the wood to permeate the liquids. Moreover, because of its taste properties, wood contributes to the development of a more complex flavor profile in alcoholic beverages over time.
The fact remains that oxidation can cause a reduction in taste in unopened bottles of moonshine; but, if your moonshine is exposed to sunlight while it is being stored, it can also cause it to taste terrible.
What is the best way to store moonshine?
If you want to store your moonshine, it is not required to chill it, although doing so will have no detrimental impact on your spirits. A flaw in the seal of your moonshine container will only lead it to decay, and the only things that may cause it to ruin are light, heat, and oxygen. If any of these substances come into contact with your moonshine, it is possible that the flavor of your moonshine will change. Keep moonshine in a cool, dark spot that does not receive direct sunlight is the greatest method of preserving its quality.
There is no doubt that it has a distinct flavor and that it can even be repulsive at times, but it will never be terribly unpleasant.
Is it truly essential to cool down the moonlight?
While it is not required to refrigerate moonshine for storage, doing so will have no detrimental impact on the quality of your spirits. A flaw in the seal of your moonshine container will only cause it to decay, and the only things that will cause it to spoil are light, heat, and oxygen. If any of these things come into contact with your moonshine, it is possible that the flavor of your moonshine will be influenced. The ideal place to store moonshine is in a spot that is chilly and dark and does not receive direct sunlight.
There is no doubt that it has a distinctive flavor and that it can even be unpalatable at times, but it will never become excruciatingly unpleasant.
How long may moonshine be stored in the refrigerator?
While it is not required to refrigerate moonshine for storage, doing so will have no detrimental affects on your spirits. Light, heat, and oxygen are the only things that can cause your moonshine to spoil if your container is not properly shut. Your moonshine’s flavor may be affected if any of these items come into contact with it. The ideal place to store moonshine is a spot that is chilly and dark and does not get direct sunlight. When exposed to light or heat, the quality of moonshine is unlikely to diminish.

“For optimum shelf life of high solid products such as cream-based products, storage conditions should be dry, away from direct sunlight, and in a temperature controlled environment between 50 degrees F and 77 degrees F,” the company says.
Drinking within 6 to 9 months of opening, or longer if refrigerated, will typically result in the greatest flavor.
It has a shelf life of “about” two years if it is kept unopened, but just nine months when it is kept open.

Legend or lawbreaker: The real story of Cocke County’s Popcorn Sutton
Tennessee is enamored with the history of their moonshine. From mountain guys outrunning tax collectors in hopped-up hot cars to the forbidden joy of drawing a sip of untaxed apple pie whiskey produced in a copper still in someone’s mountain barn, there’s something for everyone in the mountains. When it comes to the original mountain dew, even the most straight-laced, law-abiding East Tennessean can appreciate the rugged outlaw poetry that has been passed down through generations.
The lore of the moonshiners lives
You want proof – 100 percent proof – of your claim? Consider the words to “Rocky Top,” one of the state’s official anthems as well as the fight song for The University of Tennessee, which you can hear here. Toddlers across the state are taught to sing about ladies who are wild as a mink and sweet as soda pop from the time they can walk. They are also taught to sing about killing federal officers while sipping moonshine whiskey from a jar. Although the song is accompanied with banjo plucking, it is every bit as hard as anything AC/DC has ever put out.
A short trip through Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg will demonstrate this.
It was because of this myth that Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton was able to prosper.

Who was Popcorn Sutton?
I had no idea who Popcorn was. I had just arrived to Popcorn’s region of East Tennessee when he became a moonshine legend, nationally renowned in certain circles, and a throwback to a period when outlaws, especially white southern outlaws, were accepted and celebrated. POPcorn Sutton was born in 1946 in the North Carolina town of Maggie Valley, and he spent much of his life in the mountains and hollers that lie between Maggie Valley and Cocke County, Tennessee. Popcorn, on the other hand, was born too late for the genuine age of Thunder Road and the idealized bootlegger to exist.
By the time he reached adulthood, the county’s second illegal cash crop, marijuana, was on the increase.
How long did Popcorn Sutton make his moonshine?
Despite several convictions dating back to 1974, including one for assault with a lethal weapon, Popcorn continued to work in the entertainment industry until 2009. Sutton was sentenced to 18 months in jail when he was apprehended with hundreds of gallons of shine and a.38 caliber revolver in his possession. Even at that point, hundreds of individuals signed a petition pleading with the federal judge to be kind with them. At the time, I wrote about the hypocrisy that pervaded the region — a problem that I personally experienced.
Sucker Punch Pictures’ This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I’ll Ever Make was filmed in JB and Popcorn Sutton’s home during the production of the film (photo courtesy of Sucker Punch Pictures) In a time when we were railing against the evils of drugs and imposing harsh punishments on those who trafficked in illicit and illegal drugs, we were celebrating Popcorn and his mountain ways, who were selling a product that was every bit as addictive and harmful as many of the drugs for which other lawbreakers were being imprisoned.
- East Tennessee was known as the “Illegal is Illegal” capitol of the world at the time of Popcorn’s death.
- Illegal was a source of irritation for Popcorn.
- We were taken in by the legend.
- And it was simple to do because Popcorn, for all of his backwoods ways, was a marketing wunderkind.
In fact, he was featured in newspapers such as the New York Times. My God, the man was a gold mine of contentment. A profane, he was decked up in a big scraggly beard, “overhauls,” and a beat up old hat adorned with feathers and his “coon pecker” bone, among other things.
The living caricature of an old Smoky Mountain man
Although Popcorn was arrested numerous times beginning in 1974, including one for assault with a lethal weapon, he continued to work as a popcorn maker until his death in 2009. Sutton was sentenced to 18 months in jail when he was apprehended with hundreds of gallons of shine and a.38 caliber handgun. In the meantime, hundreds of individuals signed a petition pleading with the federal court to be kind in his decision. The hypocrisy that affected the region at the time was something I wrote about at the time.

- East Tennessee was known as the “Illegal is Illegal” capital at the time of Popcorn’s death.
- Illegality was a source of irritation for Popcorn’s.
- We were taken in by the legend.
- So we fell for the sleazy con.
- A number of media outlets, including the New York Times, published articles about him.
- A profane, he was decked up in a big scraggly beard, “overhauls,” and a battered old hat ornamented with feathers and his “coon pecker” bone, among other things.
But quiet desperation wasn’t his way
But make no doubt about that. That was not what he had in mind. Popcorn was completely uninterested in living the life that the rest of us were enjoying. He wasn’t the kind to be quiet in his desperation. When he takes a break throughout the documentary, he informs the camera that he began smoking and drinking when he was six years old, pausing at one point to light one unfiltered cigarette from another. “They believe that smoking and drinking will kill you,” he says, explaining his beliefs. “However, I do not believe that because my grandfather lived to reach almost 90 years old, and when he died, they said that blasted old likker and cigarettes were responsible for his death.
Not that I care, because I’m not going to live to be 90 anyhow.
It didn’t matter if you were a hero, an anti-hero, or an ordinary law-breaking cuss.
Instead, he committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in 2009, at the age of 62, after being diagnosed with cancer. He chose to commit suicide rather than serve time in prison.
Popcorn Sutton’s complicated legacy
In the years following his death, the rights to create a legal whiskey under Popcorn Sutton’s name were sold to Hank Williams Jr., who is accused of including nothing of Sutton’s genuine legacy – other than the name – in the finished product. Hank Williams Jr. has denied the charges. While pounding his way through the tall weeds, he remarks, “This is a hell of a way to make a livelihood, creating this goddamned likker.” The documentary shows him producing the likker. Maybe that’s the case. However, I have a hard time thinking he would have wanted to do much more than that.
Mostly because that’s how we, and especially him, wanted it to be.
We appreciate their cooperation.

Everything You Need to Know About Ole Smoky Creams
Any visitor to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is likely to have sampled some whiskey from Ole Smoky’s Moonshine Distillery. It’s almost like a rite of passage for visitors to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Ole Smoky Creams, on the other hand, are a brand-new product that they’ve developed. It is possible to enjoy Ole Smoky Creams cold, on the rocks, or even drizzled over ice cream! These are ideal for eggnog and other warm beverages on chilly winter days. There are a number of different varieties of creams, but we’ll concentrate on the following four:
“This is just like the beloved whiskey confection, except in liquid form!” Imagine the tastes of creamy milk chocolate and bourbon whiskey coming together in one bite – that’s what you’ll get with Bourbon Ball chocolate.
“There’s a softer, sweeter side to whiskey, which comes in the shape of a creamy, toasted caramel liqueur with subtle undertones of chocolate that we like to call Tennessee Mud,” says the distillery. Served neat or over ice, this 35 proof scotch is delicious in coffee or hot chocolate (drool! ). It’s essentially whiskey-infused perfection at its finest.
‘Whiskey may be found in the form of Tennessee Mud, a creamy, toasted caramel-flavored liquor with subtle chocolate notes that we like to refer to as a softer, sweeter side of the whiskey spectrum. Served neat or over ice, this 35 proof scotch is delicious in coffee or hot chocolate (drool!). It’s pretty much whiskey-infused perfection at its finest.
Red Velvet Cream
Is your mouth watering at this point? Yes, that is correct, it is red velvet. And whiskey, of course. What could possibly be better than that? This one is fantastic in cocktails, on the rocks, or even in hot chocolate!
It’s like being able to have your cake and eat it too. The cooler months are approaching, and now is a good time to keep warm by using some of these new creams. There is only one question: which one would you choose to test out first?
Moonshine Tasting Tours in Gatlinburg
If you are unfamiliar with Jack and would like to learn more about Shine, this post is for you! If you’re planning a trip to the Smokies, make sure to include a moonshine tour in your itinerary so that you may sample all of the many flavors and variations that each distillery has to offer. Here is a video tour of Ole Smoky Moonshine and Sugarlands Distilling Company, conducted by the author. The tours will run around 30 minutes. Each has their own distinct approach to moonshine, but they both take tastings very seriously….
Ole Smoky Moonshine
There are two Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery locations to select from: Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The distillery is an excellent starting point for a moonshine sampling tour. The Barrelhouse in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, was previously the home of Davy Crockett Whiskey and is now the home of Ole Smoky Whiskey. The Holler, located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is a considerably larger facility that serves as Ole Smoky’s headquarters. Show your identification to the shine server, and you will be partnered with other guests to begin the tour.
The majority of moonshine may be mixed with other beverages.
Blue Flame – 128 proof
It will take your socks off to drink this moonshine! The electric blue “Blue Flame” whiskey sold by Ole Smoky is the most potent moonshine available, as evidenced by the way it burns through your nostrils. Check out some of the combination recipes on the Ole Smoky Moonshine website if you want to get creative.
Blackberry – 40 proof
It will knock your socks off to drink this moonshine! As it burns through your nostrils, you’ll see that the electric blue “Blue Flame” is the strongest moonshine Ole Smoky offers. Consider some of the mix recipes on the Ole Smoky Moonshine website if you want to spice things up a little.
Huckleberry – 40 proof
This moonshine will knock your socks right off your feet! The electric blue “Blue Flame” moonshine sold by Ole Smoky is the strongest moonshine available, as seen by the way it burns through your nostrils. Consider some of the combination recipes on the Ole Smoky Moonshine website if you want to be creative.
Hunch Punch Lightnin’ – 80 proof
In this moonshine, a blend of orange, pineapple, and cherry juices is combined with a hint of heat that burns through the nose and tail.
Apple Pie – 70 proof
Apple Pie moonshine is the company’s hallmark product. If Ole Smoky is available in your region, this is the most convenient option. It has the flavor of a true hard cider.
Pina Colada – 40 proof
The coconut flavor will make you feel as if you are on your way to the beach rather than to the Smoky Mountains. There is a wonderful pineapple flavoring that is put in.
Strawberry – 65 proof
This would be fantastic with a glass of lemonade. It has a flavor that is comparable to that of a jolly rancher.
Orange – 70 proof
It’s really tart.
It has the flavor of orange Gatorade. Combine it with Sprite to create something completely different. It’s so excellent that you may find yourself in serious trouble quickly!
Moonshine Peaches – 100 proof
There are pieces of peaches within. Overall, it doesn’t have as much of a punch on the palate.
Butterscotch – 40 proof
Serve it on top of ice cream to keep cool during the hot summer months! It had a sweet salted caramel flavor to it, but it wasn’t overbearing by the end of the glass.
Mountain Java – 35 proof
Cool down in the heat by sprinkling it on top of ice cream. A delicious salted caramel flavor emerged, which was not overbearing in the aftertaste.
Tennessee Mud – 35 proof
This is officially whiskey-infused rather than moonshine-flavored, and it has undertones of vanilla in the flavoring as well. You can make a Snickers shot by mixing it with caramel and calling it that. It has a flavor that is similar to chocolate milk (but with a kick!). After you’ve finished with the moonshine sampling, have a peek around the store. They offer a plethora of additional varieties of shine to choose from. Some are only accessible during specific seasons, while others are only sold at the distillery.
If you purchase a jar, you may save a few of dollars by purchasing the pour lid for only $.99 (usually $2.99), which is normally $2.99.
Sugarlands Distilling Company
Sugarrlands Distilling Company, located in downtown Gatlinburg, offers a more boisterous moonshine tasting experience. You’ll get to try the most of the spread they have to offer. Taking a VIP tour at Sugarlands will provide you with an experience that is slightly different from the others. An optional blended tasting tour, which includes a 30-minute private tour of the still house, is also available. You’ll get the opportunity to see shine being created and will also receive a special mixology instruction (you can also drink the cocktails being made).
When you’re ready to begin your tasting tour, present your identification at the front desk and receive a wristband.
Shine is a beverage that may be used for a variety of purposes.
Anything less than 50 proof is safe to store in the freezer and can be turned into a slushy drink!
Jim Tom Hendrick’s Unaged Rye – 100 proof
This is a really well-balanced selection. On the tail, you will be able to taste the flavor of a bourbon barrel, which is delicious.
MarkDigger’s Rye Apple – 80 proof
Very well-balanced in terms of flavor and aroma. Towards the end of the drink, you will notice a pleasant bourbon barrel flavor.
Southern Sweet Tea – 40 proof
This is delicious whether blended with lemonade or consumed on its own. It’s a silky smooth mix made with cane sugar and black tea that’s made with cane sugar.
Old Fashioned Lemonade – 40 proof
If you don’t care for strong flavors in your moonshine, this is a decent option for you.
It has a pleasant sweetness to it, as well as a citrus aftertaste.
Blueberry Muffin – 70 proof
A strong blueberry flavor with a tinge of lemon is present. This is the first year that this flavor has been provided on a consistent basis.
Blockader’s Blackberry – 40 proof
I recommend that you take a whiff of this to get the full experience. There are faint floral overtones in the fragrance. You may add a splash of lemon-lime soda to make a quick and simple drink.
Peanut ButterJelly – 70 proof
This sheen appears to be the result of some sort of witchcraft. It has a jelly flavor to it, with a roasted peanut aftertaste. If you take a deep inhale and exhale through your nose, you will taste jelly. When you exhale through your mouth, you’ll get a flavor of peanuts.
Mark Rogers American Peach – 70 proof
Using this moonshine, you’ll be able to experience the flavor of summer peaches on your palate. It has a little bite to it, which is to be anticipated given its high proof of 70 percent.
Appalachian Apple Pie – 50 proof
When compared to MarkDigger’s Rye Apple shine, this tastes more like a caramel apple than the cinnamon and apple that you’d receive with that product.
Butterscotch Gold – 40 proof
With a silky finish of hazelnut and cream, this sweet shine will go down a treat.
Tickle’s Dynamite Cinnamon – 70 proof
It’s possible that this shine is a little sweeter than you think, but it concludes with a burst of fire. Incorporate it into a drink for an extra punch of flavor. After you’ve finished your tasting tour, it’s your time to decide what you’d like to purchase. For every jar of Sugarlands Shine purchased, you will receive a complimentary shot glass by showing your rack card. If you visit the brochure page and click the link for an off-site coupon for the same promotion, you will be sent to a new page.
With their moonshine, they both adhere to the traditions of Tennessee.
Important note: Due to concerns about public drunkenness, the city of Gatlinburg has instituted a sampling fee.

Where to Find Moonshine in the South
Copper is still used. Lightning takes the form of a white dot. Mountain dew is a kind of dew found in the mountains. Hooch. In some people’s minds, moonshine conjures up images of backwoods “pappies” making whiskey in creeks, all at the danger of being apprehended by the feds. The popular television showMoonshiners, as well as the filmLawless, are also worth seeing. One thing is clear, and that is that illegally made, high strength, unfiltered maize whiskey can only be found in the southern United States.
- It made extensive use of maize, which grows readily in the region, and frequently included fruits such as peaches to add taste.
- The origins of NASCAR may be traced back to moonshiners and their specially prepared trucks, according to historical records.
- It’s frequently in the neighborhood of 100 proof or more.
- are all used in the production of whiskey, and they are mixed and processed in three stages: fermentation, distillation, and condensation.
- While exploring the town of Greensboro, Georgia, I stopped into the local newspaper, where I was greeted by the editor, who handed me a glass of peach moonshine.
- a few days later.
- Although the liquor has had a rebirth in popularity, although legal, in recent years, its origins may be traced back to the mountains of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Although moonshine country stretches beyond these states, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reports that the biggest number of illicit stills have been recovered in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Many of the same family recipes are used in legal forms; the only difference is that there is greater government monitoring and that there are many more taxes.
When properly prepared, you might be surprised at how palatable moonshine can be when combined into a cocktail in lieu of just about any other type of booze.
However, some distilleries sell their maize whiskey using the term “moonshine” rather than the word “whiskey,” and they do it in a traditional manner.

When it comes to moonshine in North Carolina, the tale is largely concentrated upon Wilkes County, which federal tax collectors dubbed “the moonshine capital of the world.” Although some may disagree with the designation, it is undeniable that the mountains of North Carolina have a long and illustrious history of illegal booze production. Some of these traditions have survived into the present era. One such distillery is Call Family Distillers, which is run by “The Uncatchable” Willie Call. An ancestor of Jack Daniel’s collaborated with the corporation in the 1800s before selling his interest in the business.
Piedmont Distillers Inc., the state’s first authorized distillery, was established in 2005 as a for-profit corporation.
A second distillery in Asheville, the Asheville Distilling Company, commonly known as Troy and Son, manufactures “genuine American moonshine” using only the finest ingredients available.

Blount, Polk, and Sevier counties were among the counties where moonshining took place in Tennessee, in the area now known as the Great Smoky Mountains. Popcorn Sutton, for example, gained to prominence in the 1960s as a result of his illicit moonshine distillation operations in Cocke County, Tennessee, and Maggie Valley, North Carolina. He committed himself in 2009 in order to escape serving time in prison, but his memory lives on through the Tennessee White Whiskey created by his wife and Hank Williams Jr.
The number of tasting rooms in the area has increased dramatically in recent years, with Ole Smoky Distillery being one of the most well-known.
In addition to Thunder Road Distillery and Old Forge Distillery, which are located in Kodak and Pigeon Forge, respectively, Cocke County Moonshine Distillery is located in a more rural setting yet produces a more genuine product.

Tennessee Whiskey Trail
There’s a renaissance in the whiskey and moonshine industry in the Great Smoky Mountains right now. The town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and its surrounding environs have long been recognized for the skill of distilling; during the Prohibition era, it was a haven for illicit moonshiners who sought refuge in the area. The Smoky Mountains were previously a haven for these formerly-illegal enterprises, but they are today a hub for legal distillation facilities that produce some of the world’s greatest whiskey.
The Tennessee Whiskey Trail, which includes information on sites, products, and history, strives to assist travelers in discovering everything that the state has to offer!
For many folks, the first thing they ask is: “How do I get started on the trail?” It changes depending on whatever Tennessee town you’re in when you ask this question.
If you’re visiting the area to stay in one of our excellent Gatlinburg cabin rentals, the town of Gatlinburg will, without a doubt, be your Tennessee Whiskey Trail destination.
Touring the distilleries and sipping their brews while enjoying the company of your friends and traveling partners are some of the best ways to spend an afternoon in downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Starting with the Gatlinburg Barrel House, home of Davy Crockett’s Tennessee Whiskey and TNT from Tennessee, a cinnamon bourbon whiskey that will set your taste buds on fire, you may learn about the history of Tennessee whiskey.
There are excellent liquid versions of all the Southern favorites available for sampling here!
Their special combination of maize and sugar results in great moonshine, and the mercantile store here has several new tastes that you are sure to like.
Next, be ready to tour Tennessee’s first legal moonshines distillery, which will be open to the public.
As you get closer, you’ll notice the unique fragrance of grains being cooked and fermented, as well as the moonshine stills hard at work in the background.
Sugarlands Distilling, the last but surely not least, is a barn-house distillery constructed from salvaged wood from four historic barns, allowing elements of history to be found in every square inch of this property.
You may take some home in a genuine wooden box if you try their delectable butterscotch gold, Southern sweet tea, or lemonade tastes.
Remember to drink sensibly and designate a driver, or take use of one of the town’s taxi services to transport you back to your hotel or apartment.
