On July 18, 2016, around 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, The author, Heather Barnett/SheKnows I posted an article a few of weeks ago on how to make your own moonshine at home. Unsurprisingly, I received a large number of emails in response to that one, the majority of which were from relatives and friends who were concerned about whether or not we would be making homemade Christmas gifts this year (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). In related news, Giada De Laurentiis has just shared the perfect refreshing cocktail recipe that is bursting with the best autumn flavors.

  2. I made my own version of Clawhammer’s cherry-infused moonshine by modifying his recipe.

If you intend to keep the cherries for a long period of time, this is the way to use. When you utilize the stones, you’ll have to be extra cautious because the flesh won’t break down as quickly as it would otherwise. In the event that you want to use them within a couple of weeks, you may pit them and not have to bother about the stones
  2. Otherwise, you can use them as is. Using a sterilized Mason or other glass jar with an airtight cover, place the cherries in a single layer. Make an effort not to squish them while packing them. Leave approximately an inch of space at the top of the page
  3. Moonshine should be poured over the cherries, allowing about 1/2 inch of headroom. It’s important to remember to account for any extra tastes while filling the jar so that you don’t overfill it. Place the cherries in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours to allow the flavors to blend. They’re at their best after a week in the fridge, but because they’re covered with alcohol, you may keep them for extended periods of time (no water bath needed). Just make sure you only score the cherries if you intend to be gone for more than a couple of weeks
  4. Else, you may regret it. Serve them in the same manner as you would maraschino cherries (but just for adults!). You may also take a few out of the oven and freeze them on an oiled sheet pan, then transfer them to a plastic freezer bag once they’ve frozen completely. Don’t just toss the booze in the trash either. It is still perfectly functional

If you decide you want more cherry taste, you can increase the amount of cherry juice you use in the simple syrup. More simple syrup can be added to the jar to make the liquor sweeter if desired. If you want it to be stronger, reduce the amount of simple syrup and increase the amount of moonshine. You may also include spices and flavorings such as star anise, vanilla, and other ingredients.

  • Pitted and stemmed cherries*
  • Cherry simple syrup (recipe below)*
  • Citrus zest (any fruit, I chose lemon and lime)

They’re at their best after a week in the fridge, but you can store them for longer periods of time because they’re covered with alcohol (no need for a water bath). Remove the cherries from the moonshine and pour it into a bowl when you’re through drinking it. The citrus zest can be discarded, but the cherries should be saved for another use. Their edible nature makes them a wonderful garnish.

Are you looking for a recipe for an Ole Smoky Moonshine Cherry Cocktail? Cherry limeade is a refreshing cocktail that is created with moonshine cherries and a dash of fresh lime juice. We took a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, for Thanksgiving last year. I was under the impression that the town would be deserted and that we would have the place to ourselves. I was completely mistaken! It’s clear that I wasn’t the only one who had the idea of taking a Thanksgiving break in the mountains as a destination.

Although they weren’t on the tasting menu, these Moonshine Cherries could be found on a shelf in the rear, where they had been for a long time. Those moonshine-soaked maraschino cherries in a mason jar couldn’t stay away from me. I kept this as a small memento. My first thought when I arrived home was to prepare a drink with this little one. Several recipes for Ole Smoky Cherry Moonshine were found, but none for a refreshing glass of cherry limeade (see below). The Moonshine Cherries were waiting for me when I returned to Southern Illinois, so I went to my local liquor store. I was able to track them down at another liquor store a couple of months later.. The idea is that you will most likely be able to find these cherries at your local grocery shop as well.

Cherry Limeade with Moonshine Cherries

Moonshine cherries are used to make this drunken cherry limeade. Approximately 1 minute of preparation time; 2 minutes of total time

  • 8Moonshine Cherries, Lemon Lime Soda, and a slice of lime 1 lime wedge for garnish
  • 1/2 lime
  • 1 lime wedge for dressing
  1. Add 6 moonshine cherries to a glass and muddle until well combined. Place ice on top of the cherries and set aside. Finish with a splash of Lemon Lime Soda
  2. To finish, squeeze the juice of half of a lime on top of the cocktail. Add the remaining 2 cherries and a slice of lime for garnish.

How do you make drunken cherries?

On the Fourth of July, a buddy of mine brought boozed-up cherries to our get-together. Afterwards, she coated them in chocolate and blue sugar after soaking them in Fireball (cinnamon whiskey, which was delicious but potentially deadly). They were SO tasty, and they also had a bit of a kick to them. I had a feeling I’d want to build these for myself at some point. I attended a moms-only Christmas dinner with a handful of my dearest friends last weekend, and I was in charge of the dessert table (obviously).

I believe you might also make use of vodka (vanilla, whipped cream, or cake would be amazing).

Refrigerate them for at least 24 hours before using (the longer you chill, the more flavor they absorb).

*** This is critical to getting the chocolate to work — drain them thoroughly and then gently wipe them down with paper towels to remove any excess moisture.

Then, once you’ve dried them, you dip them into white chocolate and add sprinkles…and then you have drunken cherries!

Instead of white chocolate chips, I propose using almond bark or Candiquik as a substitute. They are designed to be used for dipping and are more resistant to liquid. As a precaution, I worked in batches (2 ounces of candy at a time) for melting and dipping in case my chocolate became seized in the middle of the process. I prefer to melt candy in disposable Dixie bowls since they are microwave safe and can be thrown away after use, making cleaning a breeze! The inebriated cherries can then be dusted with sprinkles after they have been dipped in the chocolate coating.

It was clear that everyone enjoyed them because they were gone even before thefudgeandbrownies.

Remove the jar from the heat and drain the alcohol. (Tip: save it for cocktail hour only!) After removing the cherries from the liquid, put them between layers of paper towels and pat them dry. To avoid damaging the chocolate, you want them to be as dry as possible before dipping them. (Water and chocolate do not go together.)
  • Work in batches to save time: 2 ounces of chocolate should be melted in a small dish. (I prefer to use paper bowls since they are easy to clean.) Melt according to the guidelines on the packaging. Place each cherry on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and dip it in the white chocolate before dipping it in the sprinkles. Set the temperature by chilling. Working with chocolate in small batches ensures that you don’t waste any and that the chocolate doesn’t seize from the liquid and destroy the entire batch. Each batch of chocolate you melt should be melted in a separate basin. Place the container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before serving.
