“ Based on a True Story,” the title insists, always a warning of fraud. This is the story of the three Bondurant brothers; the grandson of one of them, Matt Bondurant, wrote a novel, The Wettest County in the World (2008), that is the basis for this film. For myself, I found the movie got away with it—just.

Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke: the actors playing the Bondurant brothers in Lawless

Forrest Bondurant is played by Tom Hardy, who portrays the aloof brother who is in charge of the family’s bootlegging enterprise. Hardy is a tough person who understands what it is to be a thinking man. On the film, he mixes a gritty, muscular presence with a ferocious intelligence that simmers beneath the surface and occasionally bubbles to the surface. Apart from his role as Forrest Bondurant inLawless, the 34-year-old has taken on roles as guys who should not be trifled with, such as the titular scourge of the British jail system in Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2008 thriller, The Expendables.

He has also given standout performances in films such as Inception and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (as agent Ricki Tarr).

However, in Lawless, where he plays the family’s supposedly indestructible middle brother Forrest, he only talks when it is absolutely necessary.

While Jack may have higher desire, Forrest is well aware of the limitations of his family’s influence.

As Forrest’s gentler side was explored, he desired to play him in a more subdued and restrained manner.”

Shia LaBeouf

‘Jack Bondurant’ is played by Shia LaBeouf, who portrays the younger brother who is ambitious yet ignorant and wants to overhaul the family business. Early on in the novelLawless, Jack comes to the conclusion that his family must move on to greater and better things. Even though they operate a reasonably successful bootlegging business and are well regarded and feared in their town, they might be accomplishing much more in a period when Prohibition-era America is hungry for as much moonshine as their homemade stills can produce.

  • LaBeouf’s first prominent part was in the 2003 adventure comedyHoles, and he initially gained widespread attention as the lead in the 2007 thrillerDisturbia.
  • He made the decision to call it quits and move on last summer.
  • LaBeouf claims that he has never previously played a character like Jack Bondurant.
  • He has his first taste of moonshine and his first kiss, both of which are memorable.

His inability to empathize is a hindrance to his criminal career.” As a result of his adoration for big-time Chicago gangsters and his desire to mimic them, Jack’s persona becomes increasingly hardened, and LaBeouf navigates the shift with amazing conviction while maintaining a glimmer of Jack’s innocence.

Jason Clarke

Howard, the eldest brother, is a persistently vicious figure who serves as the Bondurant clan’s enforcer. Jason Clarke portrays Howard. Those unfamiliar with the Irish-American crime dramaBrotherhood may struggle to put a face to Jason Clarke’s name, but he’ll almost certainly be recognized by his voice on the show. Clarke has acted in a number of films, including Rabbit-Proof Fence, Public Enemies (in which he played one of Johnny Depp’s ill-fated hoods), and Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, in addition to his role opposite Jason Isaacs in Brotherhood.

He drowns his demons in booze, and his inebriation makes him an unreliable partner in the bootlegging business, but when danger approaches, he will protect his brothers with the ferocity of a berserker.

“As a force, they were diametrically opposed to one another, and Jason totally embodied all of that in his persona.” In the same vein as Hillcoat, Clarke is an Australian who grew up in a small rural community, similar to Howard Bondurant’s upbringing.

He experimented with moonshine – as did the rest of them, with the exception of Tom.” Casting was excellent because, although being less well-known than Hardy or LaBeouf, Clarke possesses a dominating presence that is equal to either of them.

Lawless movie review & film summary (2012)

“Lawless” is a well-made film about a group of people who are stupid and aggressive. I can only respect the workmanship and performance in this picture, as I did with the previous ” Killer Joe,” and I hate that it was unable to climb above them. Its characters live by a barbarous code that allows for the execution of murderers. They either survive or perish in a never-ending barrage of bullets. Rather than the film being too long, the problem is that too many people must be killed in order for it to come to a finish.

  • One of the finest films of that year was “The Proposition,” which was directed by the Australian filmmaker of “Lawless,” John Hillcoat.
  • Nick Cave wrote the script, which was partially based on actual events, and it’s possible that’s why both guys were hired to film “Lawless,” which is about a fight between Virginia moonshiners and law enforcement officers.
  • During Prohibition, we come upon the three Bondurant brothers in Franklin County, Virginia, who become our characters.
  • Special Agent Charley Rakes (Guy Pearce), a Chicago-bred fed, is dispatched to the backwoods to investigate a murder.
  • Is it possible to shut them down?
  • Is it possible to eliminate them all?
  • His presence is conspicuous in these deep woods, like a riverboat gambler.

He may have been the first man in the history of Franklin County to wear formal gloves during the daylight, according to some sources.

Charley is such a serpent that he ought to be shot merely for the sake of being shot.

The three brothers own and operate a combined shop, restaurant, and gas station in the middle of nowhere, where, as far as I can remember, we never saw a client.

Forrest Bondurant is the eldest of the three brothers (Tom Hardy, Bane in ” The Dark Knight Rises “).

Jack (Shia LaBeouf), the younger brother, believes he has never really shown himself to his older brothers, but the film gives him the opportunity to do so.

Following the slitting of his neck, he pulls the edges of the cut together and sets out to walk the five miles to the hospital through the snow.

Forrest’s girlfriend, she works as a server, bookkeeper, and company manager in addition to being Forrest’s girlfriend.

He wasn’t looking for her because he was a churchgoer; he was looking for her.

Cricket Pate (Dane DeHaan) is the other notable local character, and he is a gentle, half-witted innocent who, of course, is doomed to die in a horrifying manner.

Possibly the most startling aspect of the film is the film’s final showdown.

They have that bizarre idea of invulnerability that comes from hatred and weaponry in their hands, and they blast away in broad daylight until those who must die do so and the rest of us live to tell the tale.

Additionally, I’d lost interest in the characters, including the lunatic dandy, the violent brothers, and even both ladies, who exist just for the sake of providing some female company, I guess.

I feel it is based on factual information. I wish it were based on real-world observations. “Brazen and brave, these young rebel brothers contributed to the construction of the American Dream,” according to the film’s advertising. That is something I don’t even want to think about.

‘Lawless’ helps grow Virginia bootlegging trio’s legend – The Boston Globe

The new film “Lawless,” based on the book of the same name by Matt Bondurant, stars Tom Hardy as Forrest Bondurant. The Weinstein Company is represented by Richard Foreman Jr. “Lawless” is a fast-paced feature film that was adapted by screenwriter Nick Cave (since Matt Bondurant was hard at work on another novel) and directed by John Hillcoat, whose prior credits include the Viggo Mortensen-starring film “The Road” (2009). A late-night wine delivery in the major metropolis serves as the opening scene for the new film, which follows the Bondurant brothers directly into the action.

  1. As the film opens, we learn that Howard was a brawler who may or may not have indulged a bit too much in the family liquor, and Forrest was the silent, stoic kind.
  2. And the mythology of Forrest Bondurant’s nine lives just adds to the sense of foreboding in the air.
  3. “During World War I, he had survived devastating attacks in Europe, in which others had perished.
  4. On one occasion, while trying to loot the family restaurant, his neck was sliced and he managed to get himself to the nearest hospital 12 miles away by walking.
  5. However, he lived during a period in which people were longing for super figures and personalities who were larger than life.
  6. Because it is based on true events, “Lawless” joins a long list of influential films about Prohibition, including “The Public Enemy,” a 1931 picture that launched Jimmy Cagney to celebrity and is widely regarded as the originator of the gangster genre.
  7. The movies bring home the notion that “ordinary” people were caught up in the conflict between the government and organized crime during the Prohibition Era.
  8. released this remarkable virtually cooperation between the criminal underworld and everyday people….

And I believe it is for this reason that stories like this one continue to arise.” According to newspaper clippings from Northern Virginia, the Bondurant Boys were the real deal: dangerous, ruthless, and the biggest and best bootleggers in their rural community, they possessed all of the “ingredients” of a classic American “romance” story, including being the biggest and best bootleggers in their rural community.

‘And that’s precisely how it grabbed me the first time I heard about them,’ Bondurant said in a recent interview with the Associated Press in Boston.

Understand that, at least amongst my elder relatives, Jack, Howard, and Forrest were never brought up in discussion in this context,” says the author.

Consequently, hearing of their bootlegging for the first time was a life-altering event for me.

Consequently, I set out to fill in as many of the gaps as I possibly could.” However, there was a limit to the amount of information Bondurant could gather through newspaper clippings and family archives, and he came to a fork in the road in his efforts to piece together the narrative of the Bondurant Boys.

Nevertheless, the reality is that there were too many tiny elements missing to do so successfully.

It’s possible that Bondurant’s fans were dissatisfied when his publishing firm, Scribner, revealed at the eleventh hour that “The Wettest County in the World” would be reprinted under a new title, “Lawless,” rather than the original.

In terms of the plot, the book stays the same – it is based on actual occurrences.

In the 1920s, according to historical Anti-Saloon League of America yearbooks, there were cities that sold or demolished their jails because they were so persuaded that alcohol was the underlying cause of all crime and that if it weren’t for it, there would be no need for detention facilities.

Furthermore, according to “The American Mix,” religious activists penned a new English version of the Bible during Prohibition that was devoid of any allusions to alcoholic beverages.

“And that age was one of those unusual eras in history where the majority of people, I believe, supported the outlaws rather than the government.

Even President Franklin D.

Roosevelt stated at the end of Prohibition that “what America needs today is a drink.” The narrative simply needed to be told.” James Burnett can be reached at [email protected] He has contributed to this article. James Burnett may be followed on Twitter at @James Burnett.

‘Lawless’ Movie Review

Movies, Featured Article, and more Neil Pondon contributed to this article. The 12th of September, 2012 ‘Lawless’ is a film starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy. Guy Pearce is a well-known actor. John Hillcoat is in charge of the direction. 116 minutes, R. Released on August 29th, 2010 The hills of “Lawless,” to paraphrase a well-known hymn, are teeming with life. Despite this, it is moonshine that keeps the Appalachian mountain men’s Prohibition-era village buzzing in this film instead of musical accompaniment.

  1. The merciless Bondurant brothers are renowned in their home state of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, and they are even considered to be immortal and virtually hard to bring down.
  2. And everyone who makes the misfortune of crossing their path will learn a severe and bitter lesson as a result of their actions.
  3. “We’re not going to lie down for anyone.” In contrast to Forrest and Jason, Jack (Shia LaBeouf) lacks the intimidating size, boldness, and thirst for conflict that these two brothers possess.
  4. We learn early on in the film that running moonshine is a risky profession when Forrest rushes to Jack’s aid in a dark downtown alley armed with a pair of brass knuckles.
  5. In no time, it becomes clear that the investigator, Charlie Rakes, is a psychopath with a penchant for preening and is on a collision course with the Bondurant family.
  6. This is a violent film about violent people living violent lives in a violent story set in a violent world during a violent era, and it is a violent film about violence.
  7. However, the violence is never gratuitous; it is an integral part of a gritty story’s roughness.
  8. The ensemble performance is always outstanding, with Hardy in particular standing out as Forrest, the Bondurant brother who speaks only in grunts and has an almost animalistic need to survive.
  9. Jessica Chastain portrays a former Chicago showgirl who is looking to make a fresh start in the country, and Mia Wasikowska portrays a preacher’s daughter who catches young Jack’s wandering eye, which eventually leads to a disastrous showdown.
  10. It definitely lives up to its name, as “Lawless” is an action-packed drama of a family who lives beyond the law and is determined to do whatever it takes in order to defend their way of life, no matter how far they must go in order to do so.

Moreover, much like the kickapoo hillbilly brew that has been slow-cooking in one of the Bondurant stills, it packs a punch that may be exhilarating to some, but may be too powerful and frightening for others.

In my opinion, my grandpa would be overjoyed to see himself depicted by a young actor with such promise as Shia LaBeouf. The new filmLawless, based on my novelThe Wettest County in the World, portrays him as my Grandpa Jack, who runs a bootlegging operation in a small town in the Midwest. The story follows the events around his business—as well as a killing that my family didn’t uncover for years. Even though we were all aware that my grandpa used to manage a liquor store when he was younger, this was not something that was talked about in Franklin County, Virginia.

The use of insufficient method or materials might result in paralysis, blindness, or worse.

We were all under the impression that Grandpa Jack’s trade was tiny and generic in nature.

Movie review: ‘Lawless’ lacks much more than law

I believe my grandpa would be thrilled to be depicted by a young actor with the skill of Shia LaBeouf, who is currently on the rise. On the big screen, he appears in the upcoming filmLawless, which is based on my novelThe Wettest County in the World. The memoir dramatized the events surrounding my grandfather Jack’s bootlegging business—including an incident in which he was shot, which my family didn’t find for years. Even though we were all aware that my grandpa used to manage a liquor store when he was younger, such matters were never mentioned in Franklin County, Virginia. Because of the distillation process’s use of fire, high pressure, and volatile liquids, moonshine was a risky business. The use of improper method or materials might result in paralysis, blindness, or even death. A car loaded of liquor on the open road was a tempting target for hijackers or law enforcement officers back in the day. We all believed that Grandpa Jack’s business was tiny and broad in nature. As a result, when my father discovered a series of newspaper stories about a shooting at Maggodee Creek Bridge in 1930, we were taken aback. My grandpa and his brothers Forrest and Howard, collectively known as “The Bondurant Boys,” were depicted as a renowned group with a violent reputation in these publications. My grandpa was still alive at the time of the shooting, and when my father challenged him about it, he just removed his shirt to reveal the bullet hole. That was all there was to it. Due to the fact that I was living across the country at the time, I didn’t have the opportunity to question him more. He passed away the next year, at the age of 91. My grandpa was a source of anxiety for me as a young child, as was common among young males. He was a commanding presence, and people all around the county were respectful of him. While standing in his rear storage room, gazing at an ancient set of brass knuckles hanging on the wall, I came to realize that my grandpa had led a life quite different from anything I had ever known. In the 1930s, Franklin County was not a location where people spent a lot of time chronicling their daily lives. My grandpa and his siblings did not keep any notebooks, memoirs, or letters. To recount their narrative, I relied mostly on newspaper stories and court transcripts, which only present a fragmented picture of the events that happened. As far as we know, the Bondurant Boys arrived to the Maggodee Creek Bridge on a snowy winter day and were met with a roadblock. Following the dispute, Dep. Charley Rakes shot my grandpa in the chest from close range, then Forrest in the stomach as he attempted to assist his brother. Other incidents fall more into the category of family legend, hearsay, or even myth. It’s impossible to imagine what was going through my grandfather’s head when he was 20 years old, and it’s even more difficult to try to represent the terrible old guy I knew as a young, sincere man who was over over heels in love with my grandmother Bertha. The filmLawless, which stars Mia Wasikowska as a figure based on my grandmother, beautifully recreates their relationship. I do know that he was a dynamic young man with an enterprising mentality, who respected his brothers while also pursuing his own fair share of fame. In retrospect, I believe that I was attempting to make up for lost time by writing this book. When I think about the possibilities I’ve missed, like the chances I’ve had to speak with my grandfather, I become enraged and overwhelmed with remorse. Although there were some wonderful tense encounters and moments of superb performance set against a historical depression era backdrop, the characters were all over the place.

The Director and screenplay managed to turn the film around after a gory buildup with over-the-top characters, and they attempted to wrap it up as an upbeat ‘happy ending’ love story for the secondary peripheral characters, which was ridiculous given the events that had preceded it in the first place…
