Moonshine Buyer’s Guide

RECOIL Magazine Issue 24, published in May/June 2016, is a reprint from the archives.

Legal moonshine may seem like an oxymoron, but there’s more to the true version than simply a label on a bottle of liquor. Moonshine is a misunderstood and, at times, misrepresented distilled alcohol that played a role in the formation of the United States. As customers, we want to trust that the items we purchase are exactly as described by the company who sell them. Because the marketing geniuses engaged by companies whose products we desire perform such a fantastic job, we wish they would simply shut up and accept our money.

Continue reading to learn about the most significant aspects of moonshine and why you should give it a go if it’s legal.

The person you ask will have an impact on the response you receive. The most basic definition of moonshine is that it is distilled alcohol that has been obtained illegally. The primary motivation for engaging in unlawful activity is to avoid paying taxes. People who are familiar with traditional moonshine will explain that it is a corn whiskey that has not been matured, and that it is manufactured from maize, sugar, and water. You will be told by the federal authorities that it is not a legally recognized distilled spirit.

  1. As opposed to other unlawful brews, we’re talking about the historic distilled spirits form of moonshine here – the actual Hatfield and McCoy, if you will.
  2. However, legal’shine should be labeled as “un-aged corn whiskey, corn whiskey, spirits made from mash grain and corn,” or anything along those lines, rather than “corn whiskey.” This sort of moonshine will have a corn-like aroma and a little sweetness to it.
  3. Several astute businessmen saw this and began labeling alcohol that was effectively vodka with a moonshine label as a result of their insight.
  4. Everything about it smells like something you’d put in your gas tank, which is exactly how it feels.

The origins of moonshine in America may be traced back to Jamestown, where Virginia colonists distilled grain on the banks of the James River. Moonshiners were a long cry from the stereotypes that have been perpetuated in popular culture. They weren’t out in the woods making city lads squeal like pigs, but they were in the city itself. Moonshiners were and continue to be folks who were and are just trying to make ends meet during difficult economic times in the United States. Farmer-owned tiny stills were used to augment their family’s income after distilling became illegal due to a lack of alternative sources of revenue.

  1. Following the Revolutionary Conflict, the new United States government imposed the first excise tax on alcoholic beverages in order to pay off debts incurred during the war.
  2. The Whiskey Rebellion demonstrated that the newly constituted United States government was capable of and willing to dispatch an armed militia to enforce the law.
  3. The whiskey tax was removed in 1802, but it was reintroduced from 1814 to 1817 to help pay for the War of 1812 in the United States.
  4. Following the conclusion of the Civil War, southern troops came home to discover cities and communities completely engulfed in fire.
  5. Moonshiners escaped to the mountains in order to avoid being under the continual observation of Big Brother.
  6. In order to keep one step ahead of the government during prohibition, fast automobiles were utilized as a strategy.
  7. The automobile that was driven to victory in the inaugural official NASCAR race was said to have delivered a full load of moonshine the week before the event.
  8. The moonshine featured in this buyer’s guide is a representative sample of a rapidly expanding segment of the alcohol business.
  9. Our testing procedures were straightforward, but they were deserved of some sort of gold star for preventing death after consuming a large number of different distilled spirits in a short period of time.

We understand that it’s a difficult life, but it’s all for the goal of informing our readers about awesome things.

Scent Test: The moonshine should have a corny smell to it, with undertones of sweetness in the background. An ethanol odor is unwanted in the production of moonshine. It is possible to observe bubbles in the moonshine if you shake the jar. A high-proof alcohol level is indicated by larger bubbles that dissipate fast, whereas a low-proof alcohol content is indicated by smaller bubbles that fade slowly. Light a little quantity of moonshine on fire in a shot glass to conduct a burn test. If the liquid burns blue, it indicates that the alcohol concentration is high and that it is free of contaminants.

Lower proof moonshine will not burn when it comes into contact with a flame.

If the recipe calls for “Grain Neutral Spirits,” it is not an authentic corn mash moonshine recipe, according to this indicator.

Moonshine’s Gone Legit But It Still Is Dangerous

Photograph by Scott Olson / Getty Images Home-distilled moonshine, formerly a closely guarded secret of Appalachian backwoods, is still in existence to this day. In fact, it is now officially legal. “White lightning,” as it is referred as, was originally considered an illegal and dangerous chemical by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, but it is now approved for sale and controlled by the federal government in select states in the United States. Several other states, including Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky, have followed suit.

Many believe that over a million illegal moonshine stills are currently operating throughout the United States, making the manufacture of clear, high-potency drink more ubiquitous and pervasive than at any other time in history.

What Is Moonshine?

When you make moonshine, you’re fermenting a sugar source to generate ethanol, which is also called as “hooch” or “homebrew.” The traditional method of making moonshine is to boil maize and sugar together. A distillation procedure is used to remove the alcohol from the mash after it has been fermented. One significant distinction between moonshine and other alcoholic beverages such as whiskey or bourbon is that moonshine is not matured. It is the end product of this process that creates an alcoholic beverage with a high proportion of alcohol, often several times larger than 100 proof (50 percent), such as white whiskey.

That is, the ability to purchase commercially made, all-copper moonshine stills on the internet has removed a significant amount of the danger associated with the moonshine distillation process.

Despite these advancements, this does not imply that all moonshine is safe to consume in large quantities. Plenty of moonshine is still being produced in stills constructed from vehicle radiator components and other potentially hazardous items.

Impact of Moonshine

Once upon a time, moonshine was a significant financial component of the Appalachian economy, serving as a source of money during difficult economic times and in places where poverty was prevalent. Moonshine, like every other product manufactured in the United States, underwent peaks and troughs in the supply and demand cycle. When the price of sugar increased in the United States beginning in the 1950s, the moonshine industry suffered a severe downturn. The spirit appeared to be slipping away as the United States witnessed a surge in the use of marijuana and prescription medications, which reached epidemic levels in the region.

With the current trend toward increasing costs at the liquor shop, particularly for foreign spirits, moonshining has re-entered the public consciousness.

Tennessee legalized the sale of alcoholic beverages at large box retailers such as Walmart and Sam’s Club the following year.

They are available for purchase for anything from $150 to $11,000, and everything in between.

Potential Dangers

Once upon a time, moonshine was a significant financial component of the Appalachian economy, serving as a source of money during difficult economic times and in places where poverty was widespread. Moonshine suffered peaks and troughs in the supply and demand chain, much like any other item manufactured in the United States. When the price of sugar increased in the United States beginning in the 1950s, the moonshine industry suffered a severe downturn.. Because to an upsurge in the use of marijuana and prescription medicines at epidemic proportions in the United States, it appeared that the spirit was becoming a disappearing tradition.

With the current trend toward increasing costs at the liquor shop, particularly for foreign spirits, moonshining has once again risen to the forefront of public discussion and debate.

Tennessee legalized the sale of alcoholic beverages at big-box retailers such as Walmart and Sam’s Club the next year, in 2007.

Depending on the model, they can cost anywhere from $150 to $11,000, or even more! One salesman said that the demand for his copper stills had more than doubled in recent years, and that he had sent stills to every state in the United States of America.

Distilling Process

The distillation process itself generates flammable alcohol vapors, which are released during the operation. The presence of flammable vapors is one of the primary reasons that moonshine stills are nearly always situated outside, despite the fact that this makes them more visible to law authorities. The danger of vaporous explosions is too large to be contained within the building. When it comes to eating the liquid, if the end result has a proof more than 100, the moonshine itself is incredibly flammable and may be quite hazardous.

However, while the flammability of the distilling process and the product itself is a concern, more people have died from drinking moonshine than have perished in still explosions owing to the poisons in the brew, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Despite the fact that the majority of stills in use today are of the all-copper form, there are still a significant number of old-fashioned handcrafted stills extant. Traditionally, antique stills have used automobile radiators in the distillation process, and they are more likely to contain lead soldering, which can contaminate the moonshine.

  • Methanol tainting may develop in bigger quantities of distilled moonshine, and it is especially common in older batches.
  • The greater the batch size, the greater the amount of methanol.
  • Methanol is extremely dangerous and can result in blindness or even death if inhaled.
  • Christopher Holstege, a physician affiliated with the University of Virginia Health System, conducted a research in 2004 in which he examined 48 samples of moonshine acquired by law enforcement from various stills.

How to Test for Purity

According to folklore, one method of determining the purity of moonshine is to pour some onto a metal spoon and light it on fire. Although lead is not harmful when burned with a blue flame, it is harmful when burned with a yellow or red flame, leading the ancient adage, “Lead burns red and makes you dead.” The spoon burning approach, on the other hand, is not fully dependable. Other poisons that may be present in the brew, such as methanol, which burns with a bright blue flame that is difficult to notice, are not detected by this method.

Public health experts are afraid that moonshine poisoning in unwell people may go unnoticed since most healthcare practitioners regard it to be an outmoded practice from years ago.

History of Moonshine

As far as historians can tell, the practice of manufacturing alcohol has been present since the dawn of civilization. Moonshine, in particular, is said to have been brought into the United States by Scotch-Irish immigrants in the late 1700s, notably in the southern Appalachian region. According to Appalachian anthropologists, the Scotch-Irish immigrants who relocated to the region in the late 1700s and early 1800s carried with them their practice of home brewing as well as their formula for high-potency hooch, which was popular during the time period.

As a result, it may be kept concealed from prying eyes such as the police or hungry neighbors “Jason Sumich, Department of Anthropology, Appalachian State University, believes this is correct.

The side of the antique clay jars was frequently marked with the letters “XXX.” Supposedly, each “X” reflected the number of times the drink had gone through the distillation process before it was bottled.

Moonshine Laws

When it comes to alcoholic beverages, the phrase “moonshine” can apply to a variety of distinct types of liquor. Historically, the term “moonshine” referred to whiskey that was produced and distilled in one’s own house. When alcohol was outlawed in the United States during the Prohibition era, the phrase “bathtub gin” was used to refer to home-brewed moonshine, which was produced in bathtubs. Moonshine is often created from a type of maize mash or a combination of corn mashes. People today manufacture artisan moonshine out of a sense of nostalgia and a desire for a particular flavor profile.

However, distilling alcohol in one’s house, even for personal consumption, is prohibited under federal law.

These facilities produced legal moonshine for the purpose of sale and distribution.

Moonshine has always held a prominent position in the American imagination, and its resurgence in popularity in the twenty-first century has resulted in increased tourism revenue for local vendors.

Is Moonshine Illegal?

There are federal and state laws that prohibit the manufacture of alcoholic beverages for the purpose of distribution or sale to the general public. It is allowed under federal law to own a still of any size without obtaining a permission; nevertheless, a permit is necessary in order to make alcohol with the still. Regardless of how large the still is, it is still a still. Stills pose genuine dangers and concerns, which is why they are subjected to extensive regulation. A federal distilled spirits permit is required in order to lawfully manufacture and distribute alcoholic beverages for the purpose of sale and distribution.

These licenses are intended for major manufacturers only. They are both pricey and difficult to get by in large quantities. It is possible to get a Federal Fuel Alcohol Permit at no cost, but it is meant for the production of alcohol for purposes other than ingestion.

Is Moonshine Illegal in my State?

State regulations on the legality of home distilling differ significantly from one another. The possession of a still is prohibited by law in certain states, although it is not prohibited by law in others. It is sometimes lawful to own a still, but you may be subject to a modest fine for the act of making and producing alcoholic beverages. If the Federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau demands them, still titles and permissions may be necessary. It is against the law in every country to sell alcohol to minors.

Do I Need a Lawyer?

If you have been charged with home distilling, you should speak with a drug attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer will assist you in determining your alternatives and developing your best case, as well as representing you throughout plea negotiations and in court. Howling at the Moonshine

A variety of spirits such as shine, rotgut, white lightning, booze, mountain dew, firewater and popskull are also available, as are sweet spirits of cats a-fighting, happy Sally, blue John, jump steady, corn squeezing and ruckus juice, among other things. The most infamous beverage in America goes by numerous names, but the majority of people just refer to it as moonshine. The moniker derives from the manner it was distilled in secret throughout the night using just the light of the moon as a source of illumination.

Moonshine Ingredients

Moonshine is made from a few simple ingredients: maize meal, sugar, yeast, and water, to name a few. The primary distinction between it and whiskey is the amount of time it has been aged. In the same way as moonshine comes out of the still in clear liquid form, whiskey comes out of the still in amber liquid form. Unlike moonshine, however, whiskey is matured for several years in charred oak barrels, which gives it its amber color and smooths out the flavor. Moonshine, on the other hand, does not go through this process, which is why it has such a well-known kick.

During the 1930s through the 1950s, bootleggers loaded up automobiles full with shine and drove over the country to make deliveries, evading the authorities.

It was just a week earlier that the victor of the first-ever NASCAR race had utilized the identical car to make what was believed to be a bootleg run.

The majority of micro-distilleries claim to provide ‘legal moonshine,’ but given that’moonshine’ is defined as “any distilled alcohol produced unlawfully,” just what exactly is ‘legal moonshine”? Are there any certain “styles” of distilled spirits that moonshine, even when made unofficially, may be classified as? Producers are permitted to refer to their goods as’moonshine’ by those in charge of such matters at both the state and federal levels, so long as the product is also designated by its true, official classification.

  • If you look attentively at the label, you’ll notice that Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon is really ‘grain neutral spirits,’ as opposed to ‘grain neutral spirits.’ Those are just a few of the slang terms for vodka.
  • Despite the fact that any grain may be used, maize is nearly often the grain of choice because it is the cheapest.
  • According to the legislation, it must be devoid of any distinguishing color, scent, or flavor.
  • Once again, this will be stated on the label in some capacity.
  • Georgia Moon, a Heaven Hill brand of whiskey, is made from maize.
  • Corn whiskey is the only variety of whiskey that does not need to be matured before being consumed.
  • Making moonshine using table sugar is the third sort of legal moonshine, and it is likely the most authentic.
  • A small number of legal moonshiners produce what they refer to as’sugar shine,’ which is made from table sugar.
  • Limestone Branch and Barrelhouse, two Kentucky micro-distilleries, are responsible for this.
  • It does impart some taste to the finished spirit, provided that it has not been distilled to neutrality beforehand.

Their primary hazard is that if they are ever provided actual (i.e., illegal) moonshine, they will not exercise appropriate care, which may be quite harmful.
