Why was moonshine made illegal?
So why is moonshine still illegal? Because the liquor is worth more to the government than beer or wine. - Sweet Vermouth.
- Lemonade.
- Iced Tea.
Can you flavor moonshine after it’s made?
There are many ways to flavor moonshine, but the easiest way to do it is to add the fruit directly to a jar of finished shine (or vice versa). Cut the peach into slices or (if they’re small enough) stick two or three whole peaches in a quart jar, add shine, and leave it sit.
Can you make moonshine without a still?

How much moonshine will 5 gallons of mash make?
A 5 gallon run will yield 1-2 gallons of alcohol. A 8 gallon run will yield 1.5-3 gallons of alcohol. A 10 gallon run will yield 2-4 gallons of alcohol.
How can you tell if moonshine is safe?
How to Test for Purity. Folklore tells us one way to test the purity of moonshine is to pour some in a metal spoon and set it on fire. 6 If it burns with a blue flame it is safe, but if it burns with a yellow or red flame, it contains lead, prompting the old saying, “Lead burns red and makes you dead.”

We always start with a little amount of sugar and gradually increase the amount based on the desired final output.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of distilled water 1 cup granulated sugar 2 cups blackberries 34 cup cranberries Moonshine made by Ole Smoky (Everclear or vodka are good substitutions) Simple Syrup with Lime Zest, Lemon Zest, and Blackberries We started by making a basic syrup with blackberries.

As soon as everything had been well mixed and reduced, we put the mixture into a mason jar and allowed it to cool till room temperature before storing it in the refrigerator.

A glass jar or jug was filled with approximately a 1/2 cup of our blackberry Ole Smoky moonshine, about 2 cups of a dessert red wine, our Ole Smokey moonshine-soaked blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries, as well as many thin slices of lime. We covered it with plastic wrap and placed it in the refrigerator for 4-6 hours. We then poured it over ice and garnished it with fruit that had been infused with Ole Smokey. Please keep in mind that blackberries stain!!! To emphasize this concept, consider the following: If you do not have a federal fuel alcohol or distilled spirit plant permit as well as the necessary state permissions, you are prohibited from distilling alcohol.

Moonshine is a high proof grain alcohol that is created at home and is not aged, with a level of around 190 proof. The process of making moonshine from scratch, beginning with a corn mash and continuing through distillation, is time-consuming and illegal without a license. No need to go through this time-consuming process (with unclear outcomes) when we can legally purchase 190 proof grain alcohol instead. A high proof alcohol serves as the foundation for aged and flavored liquors such as whiskey and vodka, among other things.
I often drink Everclear, Mohawk, or Nikolai, all of which are easily accessible at liquor stores around the country.

Blackberry Moonshine recipe
The use of wine or wild yeast (found on the surface of berries) is favored in order to increase organoleptic qualities, while distillers’ dry yeast, baker’s dry yeast, and compressed yeast nearly totally mask the delicate berry taste when used otherwise. The sole disadvantage of wild yeast and wine yeast is that fermentation takes 3-5 times longer than with ordinary yeast. To preserve the delicious flavor of blackberries, use wine yeast or a natural yeast found on blackberries, rather than commercial yeast (do not wash them, as it will wash off natural yeast).
- Blackberries – 6 lbs/3 kilograms
- Sugar – 1-2.2 lbs/0.5-1 kilo (optional)
- Lemon juice – 1 cup (optional)
- 3 liters of water (plus an additional 4 liters for every pound/kilo of sugar used)
- Yeast (Wine Yeast or Distillers Yeast), sugar, and salt
- Recipe for Blackberry Brew:
- Use your hands or any other method to crush the unwashed (only if you are using wild yeast
- If you are using Wine or Distillers yeast, you can wash the berries) berries until they are smooth. Place the mash in a fermentation jar and set aside. Combine the flour, water, sugar, and yeast (if using) in a mixing bowl. To accommodate foam and carbon dioxide, it is preferable to leave around 25-30 percent of the vessel’s volume vacant. Install an airlock on a bottleneck to prevent it from being clogged.
The use of a glove in place of an Air lock The fermentation process can take anywhere from 4 to 45 days, depending on the yeast used, the amount of sugar present, and the temperature (4 to 10 days for distillers’ or baker’s yeast, 15 to 45 days for wild or wine yeast). Upon completion of the fermentation process, the finished wash will be bitter and unsweet, the airlock will cease bubbling after a few days, and there will be a sediment layer at the bottom of the fermenting vessel. Making Blackberry Moonshine is a simple process.
- Using many layers of gauze, strain the fermented wash into a distillatory vessel of a moonshine still and let it steep for several days. You won’t need dry husks if you squeeze the contents of the gauze bag. Execute the initial distillation of the mash without separating it into fractions. Finished drawing off the distillate when the ABV has dropped to less than 30 percent
Obtaining the ABV of the blackberry moonshine and determining its pure alcohol content (volume multiplied by ABV and divided by 100) are two important steps in making moonshine. Fractional distillation should be performed after the distillate has been diluted with water to 18-20 percent. Separately, remove the first 10-12 percent of the pure alcohol from the mixture. “Heads” is the term used to describe this dangerous fraction. Because of the high concentration of harmful admixtures in it, it is not suitable for consumption. Remove “the body” (the primary product) until the ABV is less than 45 percent of the total. Finish the distillation or divide the “tails” into separate containers. Add water to the blackberry moonshine until the ABV reaches the desired level (40-45 percent ). Then bottle it for storage, making sure to hermetically seal the bottles with the lids on them. Prior to tasting, it is recommended that you allow the distillate to develop for 2-3 days in a dark, cool location.

Delicious Blackberry Moonshine Recipe
- With this simple step-by-step procedure, you can make mouthwatering blackberry moonshine in no time!
- One of the most common myths about moonshine is that it is difficult to drink and that it tastes bad.
- However, this is not the case.
- Contrary to popular belief, this is not the case!
- While moonshine is accurately referred to as a powerful drink, the flavor of moonshine can vary greatly.
- The reason for this is because moonshine can be manufactured from a broad variety of components, which makes it quite versatile.
This implies that you can use starch to convert to sugar (you can even create moonshine from cereal!) but you can also utilize fruit and even sugar to accomplish the same result.
Can you Make Moonshine from Sugar?
In fact, utilizing sugar as a basis for moonshine (also known as sugar shine) is a simple and popular alternative if you plan on infusing your moonshine with flavors to make it more flavorful. This approach has gained popularity due to the fact that it is inexpensive (you can manufacture a gallon for less than $5) and simple to use. It is also popular since it removes the need to fractionate your alcohol, which is another advantage of this method of manufacturing moonshine. It is usually necessary to fractionate your moonshine output in order to avoid becoming sick from consuming the by-products that are frequently created by moonshine production.
- For the fortunate, sugar shine does not need fractionation, making it an excellent choice for those who are just starting started with moonshining or who desire a straightforward technique of distilling spirits.
Infused Blackberry Moonshine or Blackberry Moonshine?
Because, as previously said, moonshine may be manufactured from virtually any ingredient. However, infusing sugar shine with your favorite flavor rather than producing moonshine from scratch is nearly usually the less complicated option. Of course, moonshine isn’t the only foundation that may be infused with flavorings and ingredients. The distillation of inexpensive wine into brandy, followed by the addition of fruit infusions, is a popular pastime among spirits aficionados. To make this recipe, we’ll start with our sugar shine foundation and then add a blackberry fruit infusion to finish it off.
Even if your moonshine is fully made, this is a recipe that will require a significant amount of time.

Sugar Shine Recipe Instructions:
- Put 8 cups of filtered water in a saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil. Try not to surpass 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once all of the sugar has been dissolved, remove the pan from the heat.
To Make your Yeast Starter:
12 cup of hot water 2 teaspoons of sugar 1 box of active yeast for baking bread
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar and mix until the sugar is dissolved.
Immediately after the sugar has been dissolved, add the bread yeast.
Stir thoroughly to ensure complete incorporation.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a dishtowel once the mixture has been well blended.
Allow the mixture to settle for approximately five minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
To chill your sugar shine, place it in a bigger bowl (or sink) filled with ice water to keep it cold.
Remove it from the house when the temperature hits around 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 5 cups of cold, filtered water should be added to your fermentation jar.
Add your sugar shine mash and mix well.
Add your yeast starter - Mix well.
Shake the fermenting vessel vigorously for approximately 10 seconds after placing the cover on it.
Fill your airlock halfway with water and secure it to the lid of your fermenting vessel - Allow for fermentation to continue until all activity in the airlock has ceased. In most cases, this takes roughly two weeks.
- Once all activity in the airlock has ceased, you may pour your mash into your airlock, where it will continue to ferment.
- This procedure takes around two hours.
