Hello there, everyone. Hi everyone, it’s Jeff from Moonshine Distiller here, and welcome back to the last episode of our Heads video series. In this episode, we’ll go through the carbon filter unit that we have in our house. In terms of components, the unit is made up of this hopper type funnel (which can actually be turned over and used as a domed cover for your boiler), the clamp and gasket that secure the funnel to the filter tube, and a 24′′ stainless steel filter tube. The unit may be purchased separately.

  1. 1.5 pounds, which is the amount we offer it in, should be more than enough to completely fill this 24-inch tube of water.
  2. At this stage, you’ll probably want to let it sit overnight to allow the flavors to blend.
  3. It will enable the air to escape and the carbon to become saturated with water if you leave it overnight and let it to rest and settle.
  4. Afterwards, give it a good stir and allow it to rest for an hour or two before serving.
  5. Although you will lose some carbon that is still floating on the surface, it should not amount to a considerable quantity of carbon loss.
  6. In most cases, I repeat this process two or three times before adding it to the filter unit.
  7. It just takes a few of coffee filters (I usually use anywhere from 4 to 6), but the slower it drains, the better, and the more filters, the slower it drains, to utilize this as a filter unit and foundation.

However, in order to demonstrate an alternate method of doing it, as well as to demonstrate how slow the filtration process actually is, we’ll simply place coffee filters over the end of the pipe, slide your 2′′ hose clamp (available at most local hardware stores) over the top, and screw into place so that it holds the coffee filters in place during the filtration process.

  • Turn the filter unit over and insert the end of the hose into anything that will assist keep the water contained while you pour the carbon into the filter unit.
  • In certain cases, depending on how well you performed at suspending the carbon, you may need to add a little more water in order to get the remaining carbon out into the filter unit.
  • As you can see, there’s already a little amount of water dripping into the mason jar at this location already.
  • It is generally recommended that your moonshine be approximately 80 proof or 40 percent alcohol by volume while you are filtering it.
  • As a result, the fusel oils are more easily captured by the carbon when the mixture is somewhat watered down.
  • To be quite honest, this may even be a touch too quick.
  • The more you use, the slower it will filter and, as a result, the better the taste of your finished product will be.
  • We’ll take the moonshine from the last run and put it in the hopper now that you can see that the water has nearly totally been drained from it.

The use of low-grade plastic is not recommended for spirits with a high alcohol level. Charcoal filtration is used by several of the world’s leading distilleries, including Jack Daniel’s. Fine spirits, on the other hand, do not require the use of charcoal filtration.

  • A significant reason for this is the fact that charcoal filtration can remove some of the more attractive tastes from the gain.

Finally, run 2-5 liters of water through the device to wash away any soluble contaminants that may have remained (c).

Step 3: Filter your Alcohol.

Pour your alcoholic beverage into the filter as the last droplets of water run through the funnel at the top of the filter (Step 3). Taste the filtered water/alcohol to determine when just the straight alcohol is beginning to flow through, and then allow it to drain into a collecting container until it is completely clear. It is possible to cover the funnel with a lid in order to prevent the alcohol from vaporizing.

Step 4: Flush the Filter System with Water.

Towards the end of the process, pour in around a liter of water to rinse out the filter and verify that all of the alcohol has been filtered out (Step 4). You’ll want to taste the filtered water/alcohol a second time to determine when just the water is flowing through and to discard the water that has passed through. Use hot water to flush your filter system (Steps 2 and 4). You will be able to feel the heat radiating out from the water as it travels down the filter system tube and will know where the water is as it makes its way down the filter system tube.

Making your Own Charcoal

Instead, I propose purchasing a 20-pound bag of hardwood charcoal and use it as a fire starter. During a survival crisis, you may have to produce your own charcoal (see below for instructions), but if the economy is still strong enough to purchase charcoal, you will come out ahead on the transaction.

To make charcoal from burning hardwoods or coconut shells.

  1. Assemble a substantial pile of hardwood. Make sure you have a suitable location where the fire can burn for an extended period of time and where you can get to it to fuel it. A metal barrel is commonly used by a large number of individuals. Small bits of hardwood should be chopped. When filling the barrel, you want to pack as much as possible into it. Create a large blaze that will burn for 3-5 hours in the vicinity of your barrel. The length of time required is determined on the size of your barrel and the amount of food you have in it. For a 55-gallon metal barrel full of wood, a 5-hour burn period is required. Allow the barrel to cool for at least an overnight period before opening it.

This method produces a large amount of charcoal, and the bonfire on the outside may be built from old wood that has been laying about your land or even slag from a sawmill if you can get your hands on it.

Activating the Charcoal

  1. Make charcoal
  2. Powder the charcoal to a fine powder. This can be accomplished by pounding the ingredients together with a hammer or using a mortar and pestle. Toss the ingredients into a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl
  3. Make a 25 percent solution of calcium chloride in water using the water you have on hand. In 300mL of water, 100 grams of calcium chloride would be completely dissolved. 3.5 ounces of calcium chloride and 1.3 cups of water equals 3.5 ounces of calcium chloride and 1.3 cups of water. Using a slow and steady stream, gently add the calcium chloride solution to the powdered charcoal and mix until a spreadable paste is created. Clear away all remaining solutions
  4. Allow the bowl to dry for 24 hours before using. Spread out on a clean white sheet or numerous layers of cheesecloth to absorb the excess liquid. The use of anything with detergent residues or scents is very essential in this situation. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, making sure to collect any water that passes through. In order to recover the carbon that would otherwise be lost, you can run this water through a coffee filter to recover it. Place the coffee filter on a cookie sheet along with the remainder of the activated charcoal and set it aside. Bake anything you have washed at 250 F for 30 minutes or until all moisture is fully gone
  5. Allow to cool before breaking apart and storing in an airtight and waterproof container.

The Difference Between Activated and Regular Charcoal

Small holes have been created in hardwood charcoal to enhance the surface area of the carbon particles and thus increase the surface area of the carbon particles when it is treated with activated charcoal. While it’s entertaining to take cheap booze and make it somewhat better, the question is whether it truly works or whether filtering the alcohol only gives us the illusion that we’ve done something. And, does it work with any other kind of alcoholic beverages? What about whiskey, do you think? Or how about a glass of wine? In a nutshell, no. It’s not going to work.

Once again, it’s time to put down the high school level scientific experiments and pour yourself a nice stiff drink.

Filtering Wine With a Brita

If it works for vodka, why shouldn’t it work for wine?
