What do Brewing Hydrometers Measure?

Hydrometers are mostly used to determine the density of liquids. When making beer, the primary purpose is to generate a sugary solution that the yeast will later consume and convert to alcoholic beverage. The greater the amount of sugar that ends up in a liquid, the denser the liquid will be. A further consideration is density of the liquid: The more dense the liquid, the higher the hydrometer will float above it. This is known as the “original gravity” value, and it indicates the amount of “potential alcohol” present in a solution.

What do Distilling Hydrometers Measure?

Hydrometers for distilling or proofing fundamentally perform the same functions as hydrometers for brewing. They provide information to the distiller about the amount of alcohol present in a solution. The density of spirits and fuel alcohol, on the other hand, is so low that a brewing hydrometer would drop to the bottom of the vessel. This is due to the fact that alcohol has a lower density than water. And it’s a lot less thick than water with sugar in it, to boot.

As a result, distillation hydrometers are used to measure alcohol by volume, or “proof,” of the alcohol. Fun fact: “proof” is simply the product of ABV multiplied by two. For example, an alcoholic solution with a 40% alcohol by volume (ABV) would be 80 proof.

Determine the Original Gravity (For Brewing)

The initial gravity of the mash is measured in order to know how much sugar is present in it. In the last section, we learned that the original gravity (OG) value is a measurement of the quantity of sugar present in a liquid and that it approximates the percentage of alcohol that may be expected in the wash if everything goes according to plan during fermentation.
