Richard Landry, a truck driver by trade and a lifelong sports enthusiast, is still getting used to his newfound celebrity as a distillery owner. After winning a nationwide competition that was recently broadcast on Discovery, the modest New Iberia guy moved from being a home moonshiner to being a master distiller in an overnight. In his New Iberia house, Landry, 49, has been distilling moonshine for almost a decade. He is a self-taught distiller who learned his craft from his father. Richard Landry, of New Iberia, Louisiana, competes in the Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners: Master Distiller” competition series.

“I was intrigued by the concept that people were actually creating alcohol, and I imagined that I could do the same thing myself.

It was Landry who admitted that he had had “countless failures.” “I’ll witness a failure that someone else has done on the program and try to replicate it myself.

So when you attempt to replicate a failure — and it’s really difficult to do, because you have to go through all of the processes to get to a failure — to me, that’s the equivalent of graduating from university.” While competing in the Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners: Master Distiller” competition, Richard Landry, of New Iberia, puts together a still in order to make cherries bounce.
