The rightmoonshine still for the job is dependent on a number of things. The volume of goods you want to manufacture, your budget, and the type of product you’re manufacturing are just a few of the factors to consider. For example, if your product is a flavored alcohol such as whiskey, a pot still will be considerably easier to operate than a column still. A reflux still, on the other hand, will be ideal for producing a high-proof product like as vodka due to its low temperature. When it comes to brewing and mashing systems, theGrainfatherBrewing System is one of the most practical options available.
- Pot stills, which were used by the first moonshiners in the Appalachian Mountains to distill illicit moonshine, are very simple stills to construct and run.
- The use of pot stills is ideal if you want to manufacture spirits such as moonshine, whiskey, or brandy that have greater taste while maintaining a lower proof of 60-80 percent.
- They are also known as reflux stills.
- The spirit will be more neutral the higher the column is in height.

Copper stills and stainless steel moonshine stills are also available for purchase at Mile Hi. Copper is a good conductor of heat, and it also has the additional benefit of removing sulfur compounds from the wash. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is highly long-lasting. Is Making Moonshine Legal?
If the idea of digging ditches while wearing shackles around one’s ankles appeals to you, you should read this article on the laws of manufacturing moonshine very carefully before proceeding. Home distillation is governed by federal and state statutes, respectively. Distillers must adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations, as well as any local laws, in order to prevent encounters with federal, state, and municipal law enforcement agencies and authorities.
In this essay, we’ll go over some of the most significant federal laws you should be aware of. However, make careful to look into the rules that govern distillation at the federal and state levels.
Federal Distillation Laws
If the idea of digging ditches while wearing shackles around one’s ankles appeals to you, you should read this article on the laws of manufacturing moonshine very carefully before going through. Home distillation is governed by federal and state legislation. Distillers must adhere to all applicable federal, state, and municipal rules and regulations, as well as any local legislation, in order to prevent encounters with law enforcement agencies and authorities at all levels of government. In this essay, we’ll go over some of the most significant federal laws to be aware of.
Federal Distilled SpiritsFederal Fuel Alcohol Permits
If the idea of digging ditches while wearing shackles around one’s ankles appeals to you, you should read this essay on the laws of manufacturing moonshine very carefully. Home distillation is governed by federal and state statutes. Distillers must adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations, as well as any local laws, in order to avoid confrontation with law enforcement agencies and authorities at the federal, state, and municipal levels. In this post, we’ll go over some of the most significant federal laws you should be familiar with.
Federal Fuel Alcohol Permit
In the event that you build a copper still kit or purchase a stainless distiller from Clawhammer Supply, you’ll need to write down the manufacturer line and your order number for the serial number (e.g. “6601”) on a sticker that will be provided with the equipment in order to be eligible for the federal fuel alcohol permit: “Pot still” should be included as the kind. The capacity of a boiler is the size of the boiler (i.e. 1 gallon, 5 gallon, 10 gallon, etc.). In this case, it will serve as the still’s identifying information It should be noted that people who do not intend to use their still to produce alcohol are not required to get a permission or register the still with the federal authorities.
Those who intend to use the equipment to distill alcohol, on the other hand, must provide their order number (which is also their serial number) on any permission documents.
State Distillation Laws
Every state has its own distillation legislation, which varies from one another. Several jurisdictions allow the ownership of a still but forbid the distillation of alcohol (for example, Colorado, which imposes a minor fine if anybody is discovered doing so), while other states restrict the possession of a still save for the purpose of fuel alcohol production (such as North Carolina, which requires a state fuel alcohol permit).
Some states may outright outlaw the ownership of distillation equipment, as well as the practice of distilling. To find out what the rules and regulations are in your state, look up state laws on Google. Also, be certain that you follow all applicable rules and regulations.
Still Registration and Reporting
According to federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau laws, still makers are required to retain consumer information. Moreover, these documents may also be sought by the federal TTB, and manufacturers are still compelled to provide them if they are requested to do so.
How to Stay Out of Trouble
Exemptions from federal law are not available for the manufacturing of distilled spirits for personal or family consumption. Individuals should never distill or sell alcohol without first obtaining a permit from the appropriate authority. Anyone who want to distill alcohol should ensure that they have obtained the necessary fuel and spirit permissions before starting (listed above). Additionally, verify your state regulations to ensure that owning and/or running a still is legal in your area.
More information on the laws of distillation may be found in our comprehensive legal overview.

Our grains are cultivated fewer than 10 miles from where we mash and distill them at Hewn Spirits, allowing us to maintain the highest quality possible. Before they are delivered to us, they are processed in a functional 1800s Bucks County grist mill by a friend we’ve known since 1972, who is currently operating his grandfather’s timber-framed water-powered grist mill to produce stone ground flour, grits, and polenta from stone ground grains. When we’re finished with the discarded grains, we send them to local farms, where cattle, pigs, and chickens joyously gorge themselves on the leftovers.
We don’t believe it is possible to come any closer to completing the circle of life — or local life — than to do so.
As a result, we will make every effort to donate a part of our profits to non-profit groups that are both locally and globally focused on making a good contribution to our planet.

Pennsylvania Might Be the Best State for Distilleries Right Now
The year before Robert Cassell and his partners started Philadelphia Distilling in 2005, there had been no distillery licenses issued in Pennsylvania since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. During the following years, he and other distillery owners worked to have laws passed by the state legislature that have resulted in a boom in the business. “I believe that on a national level, people have just lately realized how conducive the atmosphere is for distilling in Pennsylvania,” Cassell adds. “Now individuals are talking to their state lawmakers about doing the same thing,” said the author of the article.
- Cassell and his uncle Andrew Auwerda, as well as Timothy Yarnall, were resolved to get through all of the applications and paperwork as quickly as they possibly could when they were first made available to the public.
- Because the regulations were created for huge corporations, they didn’t have a structure in place to deal with smaller enterprises.
- In addition to Philadelphia Distilling (best known for its Bluecoatgin), a number of other entrepreneurs, visionaries, and trailblazers contributed to the development of Pennsylvania’s liquor industry into what it has become today.
- Following the development of a new application form, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, which operates all of the state’s liquor stores with the exception of one privately held firm in Pittsburgh, distributed the application to the applicants.
- Other ambitious distillers had also planned to build their own establishments at the same time.
- “At the time, I was looking at craft brewers,” recalls Barry Young, the brewery’s proprietor.
- The restrictions were quite difficult to navigate back then.

“It’s all because of the law that was passed.” Even in more rural regions, such as Somerset County, which is roughly an hour and a half east of Pittsburgh, the sector has exploded in recent years.

Cassell, who left Philadelphia Distilling and now owns and manages New Liberty Distillery in the same city, is one of the driving forces behind the initiative.
According to Cassell, “it’s an unparalleled opportunity in the history of our business for the large and little players to join together,” he adds. “In today’s highly heated and divisive political environment, that is an incredible accomplishment.”
