How is White Lightning made?

The whiskey is produced from mash, which is a mixture of grain, sugar, water, and yeast that ferments to produce the alcohol. Lack of aging leaves the whiskey with a clean “white” look. Distilleries are commonly made of copper for the most part, which, the producers think, helps maintain the flavor.

What percentage is White Lightning moonshine?

Firefly Moonshine is produced in six flavors: White Lightning, Apple Pie, Caramel, Cherry, Strawberry, and Peach. They are between 41.1 and 100.7 proof; 20.55% and 50.35% alcohol by volume.

White Lightnin’ Moonshine is our alternative to vodka, gin and tequila and is perfect for making Apple Pie, Moonshine Margaritas, Moonshine Mojitos or the mixed drink of your choice.

Is White Lightning illegal?

“White lightning,” as it’s called, was once an illicit and banned substance by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives,1 but it is now permitted for sale and regulated by the U.S. federal government in some states.

How strong is white lightning?

On its release, its strength was 7.5% alcohol by volume, although labelled as 8.4%.

What is Ole Smoky Moonshine made of?

Both Ole Smoky’s moonshine and whiskey are comprised of a (mostly) corn mash bill consisting of 84% corn, 8% rye and 8% malted barley.

What is White Lightning cider made of?

“White cider” ‘is made by processing cider after the traditional brewing process is complete, resulting in a nearly white product. This processing allows the manufacturer to produce strong (typically 7-8% ABV) cider cheaply, quickly, and on an industrial scale, often from poor raw materials’.

What percent alcohol is moonshine?

Moonshine usually has an ABV of 40%, but can sometimes be as high as 60%-80% ABV. Alcohol content can be converted to proof by multiplying it by two. So, 40% ABV is 80-proof. The distilling process is the key to a spirit’s alcohol content.

How do you test homemade alcohol for methanol?

Add 25 drops of iodine solution to each alcohol. Add 10 drops of sodium hydroxide solution to each alcohol. Gently swirl the test tubes a few times. The dark colour of the iodine should start to fade.

Is moonshining legal?

The production of moonshine — or really any spirit — without a license is prohibited by the U.S. government and is very much illegal. Clear whiskey in the style of moonshine might be for sale, but technically speaking, moonshine is moonshine because it’s produced illicitly.

Is Everclear moonshine?

Both Everclear and Moonshine are unaged spirits; however, Everclear is made from grain and Moonshine from corn. Moonshine is a general term used to describe illegally produced corn whiskey. In summary, Everclear is intended to be water and pure ethanol with no flavor contribution.

How to Make Moonshine: A Down-and-Dirty Guide to White Lightning

No matter how hard I try, I’ll never be able to shake off my redneck roots. It’s really becoming more and more natural to me as I grow older. There are three things that spring to mind when you hear the words “West Virginia”: Getting hitched to your sister, listening to John Denver, and making some mean moonshine. Allow me to expound on these points in a nutshell. I’ll start by saying that I never thought my sister was so attractive, that John Denver didn’t even write the bulk of “Country Roads,” and that sure, our moonshine is some of the best our country has to offer.

  1. First and foremost, there are elements of moonshine that are extremely toxic.

Second, the combination of alcohol with fire results in explosions.

Additionally (and this is the true reason why marijuana is banned), it is not subject to taxation by the government.

Step 1: Making The Mash

Water, flakes maize, barley, yeast, a mash kettle, buckets with lids, a heat source, a thermometer, and a wooden spoon are all required ingredients. Fill your mash pot halfway with water and bring the temperature up to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour in the flaked maize and stir vigorously for seven minutes. Allow the temperature to cool to 152 degrees before adding the barley. 152 degrees Stir every twenty minutes until the mixture reaches 70 degrees, at which point the yeast is added. Using two buckets, alternately mix your mash for around five minutes to aerate it.

Step 2: Fermentation

Supplies: siphon, hydrometer, cheeseclothKeep the mash at room temperature for one to two weeks before freezing. Don’t let the temperature to drop too low, since this may cause the yeast to fall dormant, which will halt the fermentation process. This is when you’ll use the hydrometer to calculate how much alcohol by volume you’ll generate… but because I failed science class, we usually just wing it at this point. After you’ve sucked off the liquid from the bucket, strain it through cheesecloth into another bucket.

Step 3: Distilling

  1. Providers: siphon, hydrometer, and cheeseclothThe mash may be stored at room temperature for one to two weeks.
  2. Don’t allow the temperature to drop too low, since this can cause the yeast to become dormant, halting the fermenting process.
  3. This is when you’ll use the hydrometer to figure out how much alcohol by volume you’ll make.
  4. .
  5. .
  6. but because I failed science class, we usually just wing it at this point.

  7. Squeeze the liquid out of the bucket and strain it through cheesecloth into a separate container.

Step 4: Go Straight For The Heart!

As we indicated at the outset, not all of your shine is suitable for consumption. Typically, a batch is divided into four sections. The “Foreshots” are the first five percent of a game’s score. It includes methanol, which will result in blindness, impotence, and other serious medical complications. This should be collected in a separate container and thrown away! The “Heads” refer to the 30 percent of the output that comes after that. Is it safe to drink? Yes, but it will result in a bad hangover the next day.

The hillbilly gods’ delicious nectar is reached by the middle 30 percent of the population.

  1. This is the item that will give you a “shine” on your face!

This section, like the Heads, is not suggested for those who want to drink.

If you must dispose of this portion, it is preferable to do it via the back window of your shed or give it to your new Californian neighbors.

  • Enjoy!

How to make moonshine – Distilling Liquor

  1. How to manufacture moonshine at home, with a recipe and instructions: It is critical that you are informed of the regulations governing the distillation of alcoholic beverages before proceeding.
  2. Some countries, including as New Zealand, allow distilling to be done legally.
  3. However, it continues to be banned in many regions of the United States and Europe.
  4. For the most part, states will allow you to distill alcohol for the purpose of making fuel, but you will need to obtain the necessary permissions first.

It is generally transparent and has a very high alcohol level.

White lightning, white dog, hooch, white whiskey, and rot gut are all words used to denote high-proof unaged spirits such as moonshine and white lightning.

  • Moonshine is a type of distilled alcohol that is produced illegally.

This, on the other hand, is nothing more than a cheesy marketing tactic.

It’s all in the name of marketing.

  • It was Scottish and Irish immigrants who were mostly responsible for introducing backwoods distilling culture to the area.

Distilling alcohol rapidly became the dominant industry on the frontier.

It was also less expensive to transport and could command a higher price.

  • Due to the high profit margins of whiskey, even George Washington decided to enter the distilling industry.

The newly constituted American government also didn’t take long to realize that they wanted a piece of the action as well.

The first moonshine movement was born as a result of this increased tax.

  1. They, too, got their firearms and began wreaking havoc on the tax collectors and revenue officers.

When it comes to creating moonshine, safety is the most crucial factor to consider.

Lead poisoning is a serious health hazard associated with the production of moonshine.

  1. This is especially true if you get them from New Zealand, where home distillation is permitted.

Either at your local home brew supply store or online, you can easily obtain a food grade fermentation vessel.

Typically, the foreshots have the highest quantity of methanol in their composition.

  1. The number of foreshots you create will be determined by the size of the still.

Here is a straightforward moonshine recipe that is suitable for any novice who is interested in learning how to make moonshine.

In order to accommodate the size of your fermentation tank, you can make adjustments to the recipe.

  • 10 pounds of corn meal is required.

2 teaspoons Gypsum Prestige Distiller’s Yeast is the brand I would suggest.

To begin, you’ll want to weigh out all of your ingredients ahead of time.

  • Learn how to produce moonshine by watching this video.

You will need to bring a big pot of water to a temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is important not to let the temperature rise over 165 degrees.

  1. Make sure to regularly mix the corn while it is being mashed for a good 30-40 minutes after it has been mashed.

One of the most straightforward ways to damage a batch of corn is to burn it.

Once it has cooled to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, it is ready to be transferred to your fermentation container.

  • Immediately after you have added all of your components to your fermentation vessel, you will need to finish filling it up with water and adding your gypsum (gypsum is not required, but recommended).

Keep in mind that the following recipe yields 32 quarts of finished product.

Moonshine is in the process of fermenting.

  • Ideally, the temperature of your mash should be approximately 75 degrees Fahrenheit, however the perfect temperature will vary depending on the type of yeast that you are using.

If you are fermenting a larger quantity of beer, you will need to use additional packets of yeast.

In addition, the more yeast you use, the faster the fermentation process will be.

  1. Place your mash container in a warm spot for several days to let it to ferment.

Using a heating pad and blanket to keep your body warm may prove to be beneficial to you.

It may also be beneficial to add a couple of pounds of sugar after the first two days of cooking.

  1. However, if you add too much sugar to the mixture at the beginning, the yeast may grow overwhelmed and fail.

The appearance of a frothy head should begin to form after a few hours of adding the yeast to the mixture.

This might be caused by a number of different circumstances.

  • When the mash has stopped foaming and the yeast has settled to the bottom of the pot, you are ready to begin distilling.

First and foremost, you should refrain from consuming any alcoholic beverages while your still is operating.

There is a widely held belief that the world will end in a nuclear explosion.

  1. The most common reason for this is the use of a condenser that is too tiny.

This will cause your still to blow out.

Another thing to keep in mind is that distillation might take many hours, and you don’t want to leave your still unattended during that time.

  1. You will need to keep your surroundings as uncluttered as possible during this time.

If you’re using a pot still (which is the most popular type), you’ll need to conduct two passes through it.

Following your first run, you will experience what is known as low wine.

  • Alcohol hydrometers should be used to check the alcohol content till the alcohol content is less than 20%.

The final run is referred to as the “spirit run.” When you do your spirit run, you will make your cuts and determine what you will keep and what you will re-distill with your next batch of cheap wine.

You will not be able to do this unless you use a larger still for your beer striping run and a smaller still for your spirit striping run.

  • If you want to do so (as most people do), you may find it useful to reduce the alcohol content of your low-alcohol wine to 40%.

Making cuts refers to determining what you will want to maintain and what you will want to redistill once you have made your selection.

Hydrometer for determining the concentration of alcohol in a drink Making cuts is the eighth step.

  1. Cuts are the difference between the amount of alcohol you keep and the amount of alcohol you throw out or re-distill.

The Heads, Hearts, and Tails are the three pieces of information.

The Hearts are the items that appear about halfway through the race.

  1. The heart of the run is what you will want to take with you at all times.

So, how do you distinguish between the heads, hearts, and tails?

If you have a 5 gallon still, you will want to discard the first 250 mL of liquid that comes out of it.

  1. You don’t want to retain it or drink it any longer.

Keep these jars arranged in a line from the first batch of alcohol to come out of your still to the last batch.

After multiple runs, you will be able to make your decisions only on the basis of scent and test results.

  1. An alcohol hydrometer is a device that measures the amount of alcohol present in your mason jars.

This can differ based on a variety of things.

As you taste the alcohol, make sure to dilute it with water.

  • When the alcohol produced by the still goes below 20 percent alcohol content, most individuals decide to quit distilling completely.

You may combine them with your low-alcohol wine and dilute it down to 40 percent percent alcohol content.

You’ll want to dilute your moonshine to a ratio of 55-40 percent alcohol to begin with.

  1. A tiny oak barrel is the most ideal container for aging moonshine.

You may also age it in Mason jars with toasted oak chips to give it a more complex flavor.

How Moonshine Mash is Made

  • Firstly, a quick reminder that distilling alcohol is unlawful unless you have an approved federal fuel alcohol or distilled spirit plant authorization in addition to the appropriate state permissions.
  • Our distillation apparatus is intended solely for legal reasons, and the information contained in this paper is intended solely for educational purposes.
  • We encourage you to read our comprehensive legal statement for further information on the legality of distillation.
  • Moonshine mashes can be made in three different methods, according on the experience of a commercial distiller.

The third approach is inexpensive and simple (and is a suitable starting point for new commercial distillers), but it is not advised for anyone who is serious about producing a high-quality product of consistent quality.

Beginning with the third recipe on this page, a rookie commercial distiller or a distillery that specializes on producing rapid, inexpensive liquor for the purpose of flavoring would be well advised (sugar shine).

  1. The “thin mash” recipe might serve as a good middle ground.

1- Corn Whiskey

Corn sold for a few dollars at market could readily generate several hundred dollars after being mashed, fermented, and distilled, according to early American farmers. Corn also produces a higher output of sugar than other grain crops. In this way, crushing maize and converting it into alcohol became the traditional technique of alcohol production on the early American frontier, giving rise to the term “corn whiskey.” When it comes to crafting a craft spirit, a commercial distiller who wants to produce a high-quality finished product would assume that pure, all-grain whiskey is the way to go.

Listed below is a straightforward method for creating a corn whiskey mash, with some extra alternatives available for the more experienced distiller:

  • The following ingredients: 5 litres of water
  • 8.5 lbs of flaked maize
  • 1.5 lbs of crushed malted barley
  • Yeast-
Read this article to find out how much yeast a professional distiller would need in their process.

  • Bring 5 gallons of mash water to a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • When the desired temperature is attained, remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the 8.
  • 5 pounds of corn.
  • The temperature should decrease to 152F after 5 minutes of constant stirring.
  • After that, stir for a few seconds every five minutes until the temperature reduces to that level.
  • Once the desired temperature has been reached, add in the malted barley.
  • Cook for 90 minutes, uncovering only to stir every 15 minutes or so, until the vegetables are tender.

Allow it to sit for a few hours, or use an immersion chiller to cool the mash to 70 degrees Fahrenheit in minutes.

Fermentation will be completed in a week or two at most.

  • Siphon the stillness out of the room.

Tips for Advanced Distillers

Advanced distillers might consider adding 2 teaspoons of gypsum (CaSO4) to the mash water and altering the pH of the mash water to a range between 5.8 and 6.0 before adding any other additives to the mash water. Following the addition of gypsum, the pH of the mash water should be adjusted lower using citric or tartaric acid. Calcium carbonate should be used if the pH has to be raised (CaCO3). Using tincture of iodine to evaluate if all starches have been entirely transformed into sugar is a second tip for expert distillers who want to improve their skills.

Drop a drop or two of the tincture of iodine onto the sample on the plate and allow it to dry.

  • Rest it for a longer period of time.

2 – Thin Mash Whiskey

Cooking a thin mash is a simple method for doubling the amount of mash produced while maintaining part of the natural grain taste of corn whiskey produced. Making it involves beginning with a puree, such as the one seen above, and then adding additional water and granular sugar to enhance the amount of wash produced.

  • The following ingredients: 10 gallons of water (5 gal to begin with, then 5 more)
  • 8.5 pounds of flaked maize
  • 1.5 pounds of crushed malted barley
  • 6-8 pounds of sugar

Yeast-Read this page to learn about the proper processes for pitching yeast.

  1. The process of making a thin mash is completed in two parts.
  2. To begin, prepare the normal corn whiskey mash as instructed previously.
  3. After the last resting period, however, add 5 gallons of cold water and 6-8 pounds of sugar to the pot.
  4. The mash is ready for aeration and fermentation when the temperature has dropped to 96 degrees Fahrenheit, as indicated in the Corn Whiskey recipe above.
  5. Advanced distillers should aim for a specific gravity of roughly 1.
  6. 08 in their final product.
  7. If the concentration is too high, dilute with water.

3- Sugar Shine

It takes two processes to make a thin mash of a potato. To begin, prepare the usual corn whiskey mash as instructed above in detail. However, after the last resting period, add 5 gallons of cold water and 6-8 pounds of sugar to the pot and stir thoroughly. Aeration and yeast fermentation, as detailed in the Corn Whiskey recipe above, can begin once the mash temperature has cooled to 96 degrees Fahrenheit. Those who are more experienced should aim for a specific gravity of around 1.08. High concentrations should be dilute with water.

2 gallons of water (no hotter than 120 degrees) should be heated before adding sugar a few pounds at a time. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved, then add additional sugar. Continue to add sugar until all of the sugar has been added and dissolved. Pour this mixture into a fermenter and top it over with 3 more gallons of water. To get a final temperature of 96 degrees, increase the heat of the extra water by a small amount. Once the final liquid temperature reaches 70 degrees, add the yeast.

  • In order to get the quickest fermentation period and the best alcohol output, aim for a steady fermentation temperature of 70 degrees.

Allow it to rest for one week to ferment and another week to settle before serving.

Is Making Moonshine Legal:

Keep in mind that this information is provided solely for educational purposes. The process of making beer is lawful since it is substantially the same as making beer, which is now permitted in all 50 states, however distilling alcohol is illegal unless an individual obtains a fuel alcohol plant permission or a distilled spirit plant permit, respectively.

A Brief History of Moonshine:

  • The Great Depression, Prohibition, and limited access to the mountainous region of Appalachia all contributed to the creation of moonshine, a beverage that is now practically forgotten yet has a legendary reputation.
  • The phrase “Moonshine” used to be used to refer to any type of homemade whiskey.
  • In part, the word came up as a result of the fact that early “bootleggers” frequently brewed their whiskey in the middle of the night, under the light of a full moon, in order to keep their activities hidden from neighbors and the authorities.

In the case of moonshine, there is no conventional formula; it can be produced using any mix of grains in any style of still.

See the full disclosure for more information. Have you ever seen the television program ” Moonshiners”? It’s one of my guilty pleasures, to be honest with you. I really enjoy the sense of humour that the characters finds in one another and in the woods. However, I admire their ability to produce a beverage and to carry on a history that was instilled in them from an early age by their parents and grandparents.

  • Keep in mind that while it is lawful to own a moonshine still, it is completely prohibited to distill any alcoholic beverages without a license.

Following my viewing of the show, I became intrigued by the moonshine production process and began doing some investigation.

Following your education in the distillation process, you should have a greater appreciation for the companies that produce the legal alcoholic beverages you consume, as well as for the original moonshiners who figured out how to do it with little knowledge of science, and in the middle of the woods no less.

It Requires:

  • A total of 5 litres of water
  • 8.5 lbs of cracked or flaked maize
  • 1.5 lbs of crushed malted barley

1. Make the Mash

  • The method begins with the heating of 5 liters of water to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • As soon as the temperature reaches this stage, turn off the heat and carefully add the entire can of corn to the boiling water.
  • It is critical to continually stir the corn for the entire 5 minutes.
  • Continue to stir the corn every 30 seconds to a minute after the 5 minutes has gone, until the temperature has reduced to 152°F.
  • After reaching a temperature of 152°F, it’s time to incorporate the malted barley into the mixture.

During this time, however, make sure to uncover the mixture every 15 minutes and whisk it thoroughly.

The ultimate objective of this stage of the process is to successfully convert all of the starches into sugar as quickly as possible.

  1. Allow the mixture to remain for another 2-3 hours after the hour and a half is up to ensure that it has completely cooled.

As soon as the temperature hits 70 degrees Fahrenheit, sprinkle yeast evenly over the mixture.

There is no fermentation if the yeast is not present.

  • This is, without a doubt, a vital first step.

Continue to pour the mixture back and forth between the two containers until you are certain that everything has been well combined and aerated.

2. Allow the Mash to Ferment

Fermentation is the period of time during which yeast does its miracle and converts maize mash into alcohol. It’s critical that the mash is let to rest for roughly 2 weeks before using. After the two-week waiting time has expired, wait another week to confirm that everything is breaking down as it should have. After three weeks, remove the container’s lid and discard the contents. The mash should have a strong alcohol scent to it, and it should be frothy in appearance. This is a notification that the corn and barley have begun to ferment.

  1. You should strain everything through a big sieve or cheesecloth to eliminate any larger bits of mash or debris from the final product.

When you are certain that you have removed all of the silt and big fragments of grain from the fermented liquid, pour the liquid into the still and proceed with the rest of the distillation procedure as directed.

3. Ready the Still

If you’re distilling moonshine, I’m going to presume you’re also a legitimate distributor of the product. As a result, you most likely make use of your still on a frequent basis. Regardless of whether you use your still on a regular basis or not, it is crucial to keep it clean. Getting dust particles or debris into the moonshine you’ve worked so hard to create is something you don’t want to happen. Different stills operate in a variety of ways and contain a variety of components. There are also several ways for operating stills that may be used.

  • Some individuals opt to load their column because it produces a greater alcohol proof, which they find appealing.

Once the still has been set up and the mash has been strained and added, you’ll be ready to proceed with the distillation process..

4. Start the Distilling Process

You’ll start by turning on the heat to the lowest setting on the still. The ideal temperature is 150 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to switch on the water at this stage in the procedure if your system still has a condenser. Using a heat source, gradually increase the temperature of your still until you begin to observe alcohol being created. It’s important to time the alcohol drops as they come out. When the alcohol is pouring at a rate of 3-5 drips per second, it is time to reduce the heat.

  1. This isn’t the case, however.

This procedure allows for the separation of alcohol from the other chemical components present in the still.

By the interaction between the mash and the yeast, the alcohol was produced as part of the fermentation process in the first place.

  • This is what distinguishes the many distillers involved in this procedure.

5. The Different Parts of the Moonshine

Moonshine production is an art form. In order to improve, you must practice as much as possible (legally!). What, on the other hand, is the difference between one person’s moonshine and another’s? This is directly related to being familiar with the many components of the product you’re manufacturing. While studying and recognizing the many components of moonshine helps to generate better products, it also helps to assure the safety of such products. The foreshots are the first 5 percent of the moonshine that comes out of your still, and they are the most expensive.

It has been linked to the development of blindness and should not be ingested.

  1. The heads still contain methanol, although in lower concentrations, and they have a strong fragrance that reminds me of nail paint remover.

Despite the fact that it does not cause blindness, it might leave you feeling groggy in the morning in the majority of situations.

The hearts are the remaining 30% of the product generated by the still after the heads are removed.

  • The delicious perfume it emits will alert you that you have successfully reached the hearts.

You’ll notice that this area doesn’t smell as pleasant and that it has a slick feel to it when you touch it.

Additionally, you may discover that you’ve reached the tails of the run because an oily layer will begin to form on the surface of the product, indicating that you’ve reached the tails.

6. Knowing the Difference

  1. I’ve gone over how to prepare a moonshine mash, the fermentation process, and the distillation process in detail.
  2. The many components of the moonshine product have also been discussed.
  3. Still, what is it that distinguishes the flavors of two distinct distilleries?
  4. Well, the formula might be significantly altered, resulting in a product with a somewhat distinct flavor.
  5. Yet, the capacity to separate the moonshine between two distinct moonshiners is the most important factor in determining the quality of the moonshine produced by each.

Because the more moonshine you create, the easier it becomes to separate the product from the rest with more precision.

Developing your ability to distinguish the difference between the point where the heads stop and the heart begins will allow you to generate superior taste as your confidence grows.

  1. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help from a mentor.

However, I must emphasize that you should only seek the advice of a legal mentor.

So, you’ve learned how to make moonshine and, hopefully, gained a better knowledge of the skill set necessary to become a better moonshiner throughout the course of your career.

  • Aside from that, after investigating this method, I have a far higher respect for the ‘original moonshiners.
  • ‘ In the hope that you would share our reverence for the wisdom they were able to acquire and pass down without the aid of modern technology or (in many cases) formal schooling, we have created this website.
