How Much Does Moonshine Cost?
- During Prohibition, alcohol was scarce and extremely costly due to the fact that it could only be obtained via illicit means.
- Aside from that, moonshine was frequently less expensive than legally marketed alcohol since it was informally free from taxation!
- Legal moonshine is still quite inexpensive, and you’re unlikely to pay more than $30 on a bottle.
- Premium moonshine may occasionally be more expensive than regular moonshine, although this is extremely unusual.
- After all, one of the attractions of moonshine is that it is unaged and may be consumed virtually immediately after distillation.
As a result, the overheads are smaller than those associated with brandies and spirits that have spent the better part of a decade gently maturing in oak barrels.

The Best Moonshine Brands That Are Actually Legal
- A moonshine drinker may be identified by glancing at his nose – the mason jars leave an indentation!
- ” The famed Wild Turkey master distiller Jimmy Russell — who has been on the job for the last 56 years — is taking us through the basics of white lightnin’.
- Why is Russell, a distiller of whiskey, considered an authority on moonshine?
- One, because he’s just fantastic.
- Two, since what most people in the United States refer to as “moonshine” is actually unaged maize or rye whiskey.
- For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to the liquid that comes out of Wild Turkey’s stills before it is matured to perfection in barrels.
Nonetheless, if done right, it may be enjoyed alone like a whisky or blended into drinks.
However, in recent years, particularly following the crisis that began in 2008, various (totally legal) “moonshines” have entered the market, and the market has responded favorably.
- Along with major distilleries getting in on the action, major corporations such as Walmart and Sam’s Club decided to offer select brands on their shelves as well, as reported by the New York Times.
There are no longer any moonshine brands that will make you pray for death, and they are no longer required designed to be drank one little drop at a time like they were in the olden days.
Best Moonshine:Firefly Moonshine($20)
It all began on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, on a tree-lined road where good ol’ southern tradition collided with a distillery that has been precise in its moonshine production since the distillery’s inception. (Which, in case you weren’t aware, is exactly what you desire.) Even though these men were making Firefly for themselves long before they opened their doors to the public, they continue to be the first and biggest moonshine distillery in South Carolina, producing high-quality moonshine in a variety of flavors to suit any occasion.
- Just make sure you don’t try them all at the same time.
Best Moonshine:CatDaddy Carolina Moonshine($20)
This is due to CatDaddy’s “secret” combination of natural and artificial fruit tastes, which gives it a flavor similar to an 80-proof liqueur. Smooth, fruity, and a little medicinal in flavor. It pairs well with bourbon or aged rum (just remember that you’re mixing two strong alcoholic beverages), while lemon juice competes with the cherry tastes in this cocktail, so don’t go crazy with the citrus juice.
Best Moonshine:Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine($35)
The reason you should try Ole Smoky is that it has a funny name, it comes in a mason jar, and you’ll be slugging liquid history – Ole Smoky is produced in what was the first federally registered distillery in East Tennessee (Gatlinberg to be exact). More indication of its illustrious pedigree, perhaps? Dave Pickerell, a long-time Maker’s Mark distiller, is responsible for the production of the 100-proof spirit.
Best Moonshine:Stillhouse Original Moonshine($40)
- First and foremost, we adore this bottle.
- Additionally, the quadruple distilled, Virginia-based spirit is a great addition to any cocktail collection.
- The charcoal filtering process reduces bitterness while also adding a hint of sweetness.
- The copper pot distilling method has purportedly been “passed down surreptitiously for hundreds of years,” but despite the fact that it has been “passed down discreetly for hundreds of years,” the creation of entrepreneur Brad Beckerman and NYC chef Adam Perry Lang has a very modern vibe.
Best Moonshine:Kings County Moonshine($20)
Kings County Distillery is the self-proclaimed first legal whiskey distillery in New York City since Prohibition, making it a good choice for environmentalists and locavores. It is made using organic New York maize and a small amount of malted Scottish barley to give it body. Because this distillery is so small (there are just five eight-gallon pot stills in a Brooklyn loft, each of which produces a little more than two gallons of Kings County each day), simply having a bottle of Kings County will earn you a little alcohol cred.
This was one of the first new-generation moonshines to be brought to the general market, and it was also one of the most popular.
- With an 80 percent, the whiskey is smooth and round with a distinct maize flavor that can be detected.
Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon ($20) is a nocturnal fantasy novel.
While it tastes more like a soft gin than a vodka, if you smash it straight, you’ll notice that it has absolutely no burn.
- Shake well, then pour into a cocktail or martini glass to serve.
1 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec, depending on preference a half ounce lime juice squeezed from a fresh lime a pinch of bitters (not Angostura) Shake all of the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice.
If desired, season the rim with salt.
- Finding the greatest moonshine brands will take a lot of taste testing, and it will take a long time.

Kings County is the self-proclaimed first legal whiskey distillery in New York City since Prohibition, making it a good pick for environmentalists and locavores. A little amount of malted Scottish barley is added for body, along with organic New York corn. Even possessing a bottle of Kings County will get you alcohol cred since the distillery is so small (there are five eight-gallon pot stills tucked away in a Brooklyn loft, each producing a little more than two gallons of whiskey per day) and the product is so unique.

Dawson County, Georgia, was the epicenter of moonshine production in the state, supplying booze to Atlanta during the Prohibition era. Counties in the surrounding area, including Gilmer, Pickens, and Lumpkin, also had illegal moonshine operations. Today, you can relive the history of moonshine at the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery, which employs a formula that was passed down from Free’s grandfather.

Blount, Polk, and Sevier counties were among the counties where moonshining took place in Tennessee, in the area now known as the Great Smoky Mountains. Popcorn Sutton, for example, gained to prominence in the 1960s as a result of his illicit moonshine distillation operations in Cocke County, Tennessee, and Maggie Valley, North Carolina. He committed himself in 2009 in order to escape serving time in prison, but his memory lives on through the Tennessee White Whiskey created by his wife and Hank Williams Jr.
The number of tasting rooms in the area has increased dramatically in recent years, with Ole Smoky Distillery being one of the most well-known.

Is Commercial Moonshine Really Moonshine?
- A flood of new-make spirits called “moonshine,” “white dog,” or “white lightning” has accompanied the growth in craft spirits over the last 15 years, with flavors ranging from apple pie to jalapeo and pumpkin spice among the most popular.
- But, exactly, what is this substance?
- Is it only a marketing ploy?
- Now, let’s take a step back and define some vocabulary.
- To begin with, the term “moonshine” is a misnomer for any commercial product since, by definition, moonshine is illegally produced liquor, which is not the case with any other commercial product.
Whatever distillers can get their hands on and are interested in experimenting with is fair game for them.
But what exactly is the distinction here?
- In order to be classified as neutral spirits, of which vodka is a subset, the spirit must have at least 95 percent alcohol when it is distilled, whereas whiskey must contain less than 95 percent alcohol when it is produced.
These distinctions are significant because the lower the proof at distillation, the greater the amount of tasty congeners that transfer from the grain to the final spirit.
Pay attention to the tiny print: if the label states “neutral spirits,” it isn’t actually whiskey.
- To a significant extent, this is due to the fact that whiskey, like other aged spirits, is a costly and time-consuming product to make.
That left them with two options: either purchase and bottle whiskey from a reputable source, or create clear spirits that can be sold immediately.
A number of prominent distilleries, like Buffalo Trace, have since gotten on board with their own new-make bottlings of bourbon whiskey.
- For starters, it may be a fantastic mixer, providing as a more flavored option for vodka in some recipes.
