Where we do it
- In Tennessee, where we handle our series rods, is where our main operations are based.
- While we would like to be able to manufacture all of our rods in the United States, it is not economically feasible at our price points.
- Our Midnight Specials, on the other hand, are built in Virginia, and we hand-turn each and every beautiful reelseat, sourcing our custom cork from a Veteran-owned company in the Pacific Northwest.
- Our blanks are created by our friends in Korea, who are known for producing some of the world’s top components and assemblies.
If you ever have a question, we will usually respond to you the same business day, and you will be treated with exceptional customer service throughout the process.

Moonshine Rods: Behind the Brand
We got up with Tate Cunningham, the co-founder and operator of Moonshine Rod Company, for an exclusive interview. Tennessee-based fly rod manufacturer and distributor specializing in the design and distribution of distinctive, well-built fly fishing rods at a price that ordinary people can afford. Check out the rest of the interview in the section below.
Flylords: Who is Moonshine Rod Co?
- Our firm, Moonshine, is a blue-collar-built, performance rod company that manufactures high-quality rods at a price that is affordable to everyone.
Flylords: Can you tell us a little bit about the team behind the brand?
Moonshine: Nick, one of the company’s founders and CEO, comes from a technology background. He is forward-thinking and wishes he could spend more time on the water these days. He currently resides in Colorado, where he is constantly taunted by beautiful water, urging him to be outside more! Jon, Nick’s brother, is the other co-founder. He is the polar opposite of his brother in terms of being all-in-creative, and he has always been hands-on in the business, inventing great stuff. The Midnight Special is Jon’s brainchild, which he has been tweaking in his studio since the firm began.
It’s soothing to watch him turn bespoke reel seats, as you can see in some of the films on his website.
- The majority of my time is spent just keeping the wheels on the bus and reminding my coworkers that Tennessee is the best place in which to reside.
If you enjoy fishing, don’t go into the rod and reel business!
Please be kind to Dakota if you ever have a problem.
- In addition, she is probably better at fishing than you are.
We’re grateful for their assistance.
When we all have to wear a variety of hats, it’s the best of both worlds for us.
Flylords: Where did the Moonshine name come from?
- Keep it a secret (wink), but the first rods may have been constructed in a work shed that also served as the home for Jon’s custom-built copper moonshine still.
- Of course, it was merely for aesthetic purposes.

Flylords: In an industry with a ton of established Rod Brands – how does Moonshine Differentiate themselves?
That’s a wonderful topic since there are a lot of rod brands that we like, but I believe what distinguishes us from the competition is that we strive to do things our way rather than worrying about what everyone else is doing. To our knowledge, no large companies have included an extra tip with their rods, so we viewed this as a chance to differentiate our product from the competition. It does not imply that your tip is about to be broken; rather, it indicates that accidents do happen out there, and there is nothing worse than being forced to cancel your vacation while you are on it.
Several people have wrote in to express their gratitude for having it after catching the rare rock and tree fish.
- We excel at providing excellent customer service.
We’ll be here to answer any questions and guide you through the process.
We overwhelmingly corrected this in 2018, adding additional members to the team and making better use of everyone’s individual abilities.
Flylords: Do you think being located in Tennessee helps identify your brand? How?
- It’s understandable that people link Moonshine (the drink) with Tennessee and Virginia, but our clients haven’t been restricted to the southern United States in any way.
- Those are throwing our rods all over the world (which is humbling), and it isn’t simply people in the southern states who are doing it because of “Moonshine.
- ” Our data, on the other hand, indicates otherwise.
- I feel that moonshine just connects with people in general because it has been ingrained in American culture from the beginning of time, if not before.
Wearing a wading belt appropriately is important.
Flylords: Speaking of Tennessee, what is your favorite local fishery?
When it comes to moonshine, I’d say the Caney River, albeit it’s been going through some terrible times the last several years, is the best place to go. Excessive rain and dam maintenance have messed with the flows and D/O, but we’re all optimistic that everything will go back to normal as quickly as possible. In the interim, I’d say the most majority of us are chasing Stripers or targeting some of the excellent Smallie fisheries along the Harpeth River and its feeder streams and rivers.
Flylords: Moonshine makes quite a few different levels of rods, could you recommend something for a novice angler? What about an advanced angler?
- The Drifter series is a good place to start for inexperienced fisherman, says Moonshine.
- It costs $199.
- 00 dollars and comes with an additional tip.
- It is a medium action caster that is simple to use.
- Putting my own bias aside, I know a number of seasoned fishermen who like fishing with the Drifter– it’s a fantastic stick for the money.
- If they’re looking for something a little more unique, ourMidnight Specialsare a great choice because they don’t look like anything else on the market.
- It’s a rod with a moderately quick action.
This will include a lighter weight in the hand, a lighter swing weight, better balance, and faster recovery time.
They’ll also be a stunningly beautiful rod, backed by the same outstanding guarantee and customer service that you’ve come to expect from our firm.
Flylords: The greatest challenge of starting a fly fishing brand in the current market?
- Moonshine: I believe it is difficult to be loyal to oneself and the reasons for which we began in the first place.
- A lot of people are brand loyal when it comes to brands, and especially when it comes to well-established brands.
- This is something we understand as a company and on a personal level when it comes to my favorite truck, for example.
- However, I believe that if we put our blinders on for a while and continue to do what we do, which is to produce excellent products and treat people with respect, things will continue to fall into place.
Flylords: What was your greatest achievement in 2019? What about goals for 2020?
Moonshine: We experienced another year of really rapid growth in the year 19′. I’m not sure if seeing Iceland counts as a life achievement, but it was definitely something to cross off the list. Our objective for 2020 is to continuing working hard and bringing some exciting new goods to market for those of you who have been asking for them on a frequent basis. I hope that our biggest accomplishment in 2020 will be that we have listened to our customers over the previous many years and that we have followed through on our promises.
Flylords: Do you have any non-profit or environmental initiatives you are concentrating on in 2020?
Moonshine:Absolutely. We’d want to continue our collaboration with Cast Hope, a non-profit organization that aids poor children by teaching them to fly fishing and providing them with positive role models. We’ve also given contributions to a number of charitable organizations and NGOs, including Trout Unlimited, The Lions Club, and numerous schools who are working hard to provide a positive educational experience for their students despite limited financial resources. We’ve also collaborated with the Public Health Water and Food Foundation for a number of years and continue to assist them.
- For a number of years, I was able to contribute in a small way to the Colorado chapter.
Serving veterans, law enforcement officers, and first responders has been a priority for us since the beginning, and we will continue to do so.
We can all make a difference by assisting others or giving back in a meaningful way, no matter how large or little our contribution.
- That hashtag #lessegosmoreamigos is fantastic.
Flylords: Does Moonshine have anything exciting on the horizon for this year?
Moonshine:Yes! We’ve got some exciting new goods in the works, as well as some exciting travels planned to shoot even more material. Making new and better rods, communicating with our customers, and witnessing individuals create lasting moments are the highlights of our days here at Moonshine Rod Company. We’re pumped for the year 2020! Make sure to follow Moonshine Rods on social media, where you can find them here and on Instagram at @moonshinerods. Chums is the inspiration behind the brand. Amazon.com: Moonshine Rod Co. The Drifter Series Fly Fishing Rod (Matte, 3WT 7’6″ 4PC) : Sports & Outdoors
On August 1, 2018, a review was conducted in the United States. Color: Matte Vintage Brown – 6WT 9′ (4PC) Purchased with a verified credit card I received my 6wt rod a few days ago with the idea of putting it together for bass fishing as soon as possible. I matched the rod with Orvis’ Bankshot HD line in WF6F to get the best results. I put on a large deer hair frog and walked out to the backyard to see how it worked. It worked well. I am by no means an excellent castmaster, but I was pleasantly surprised by the simplicity with which I was able to cast this arrangement and the distance I was able to cover; I was easily blasting out 85-90′ of the 100′ line with this configuration.
- It is not quite on pace with my Helios 3D or Sage One, but it is very near, and at this price range, this rod represents an incredible deal!

Color: Matte Vintage Brown – 5WT 9′ (4PC) Purchased with verified credit card I have to tell you that Moonshine Rods not only produces an incredible product, but their customer service is second to none in the industry.
I strongly advise you to make a purchase from this company since they are wonderful.
- WOW.
You’d want to learn how to provide excellent customer service?
On June 26, 2019, a review was conducted in the United States.
- In the end, this is a really great performing, nice looking rod that will hold its own against my other rods that cost three to four times the price of this one.
I haven’t fished the 8 yet, but I fished the 3 and it caught 17 panfish in about an hour.
I used an ancient Orvis CFO reel that I’d had for nearly to 40 years to fish with, and the combo was wonderfully balanced and productive.
- Considering the fact that this is a mid-priced reel that has received excellent evaluations, I’ll be searching for a high-quality performance rig after everything is said and done.
Color: Matte Vintage Brown – 7WT 10′ (4PC) Purchased with verified credit card One of the most effective rods available for the money.
The two tipsections are slightly different from one another; one is stiffer than the other and has a more rapid action, while the other has a medium rapid action.
- I’m not sure if this was a mistake or on purpose, but it works out perfectly for me.
The cork is of exceptional quality.
Light strikes are easily detected by the backbone quick onset sensitivity at the tip portion of bigger fish when they are engaged in a struggle.

I am quite pleased and anticipate many years of usage.
I’ve just received my new moonshine 5wt 10′ rod.
- constructed and performed various phantom casts The rod appears to have a medium action rather than a medium to rapid action.
This is beneficial since it allows for a shift in the activity.
As soon as the new reel arrives, I will load it with 5wf orvis line and cast it a few times before getting out on the lake to get a good feel for how it performs.
- Reviewed on March 27, 2019 in the United States of America COLOR: 3WT 7’6″ Matte Vintage Brown – ” (4PC) Purchase that has been verified I hadn’t had a chance to use it yet, but the first words that came out of my lips after opening the box were “Wow” and “Woooow.
- ” I was blown away by how beautiful it was.
I’ve had a few similar department store starter rods in the past, and they were nothing in contrast to this beast of a weapon.
From the lovely wood reel seat to the cork that is soft as a baby’s bottom to the anodized copper guides, it screams “tradition” in the nicest manner imaginable.
- – Oh, and while we’re on the subject, It allowed me to include a higher-end reel in the budget as well, thanks to the fact that it didn’t cost too much money.
While it may have a little less backbone (mid or medium-fast, perhaps) than I had anticipated, it is still far better than what I had hoped for and desired.
Moonshine, you and your crew clearly know what you’re doing and take a great deal of pride in your product.
- Come down to the Catskills someday, and who knows, I could run into you in the water:).

I am a relative newcomer to fly fishing, and after purchasing a couple rods, I made the decision to purchase Moonshine’s. From the tip of the rod to the end of the rod, it is just stunning. It casts fantastically even with a rather low-cost line and reel, which I have on my 7’6″ 3-wt.
Moonshine Rod Co. The Drifter Series Fly Fishing Rod Review
Before we get started with our review of the Moonshine Rod Co. Drifter Series Fly Fishing Rod, let’s take a moment to learn a little bit about the company that brought you this rod. Moonshine Rod Company Midnight Special ($299; moonshinerods.com)
Historically, the “unique selling proposition” that claims “we’ve designed a rod that casts equally as well as the up-priced ones” has been around since, well, the up-priced rods cost $300 (then $400), $500 (then $700), $800 (then $900), and now $900 (then $1,000). With the “design in America, manufacture elsewhere” strategy, Temple Fork has grown to become one of the world’s largest fly rod makers, if not the world’s largest overall. Redington has also been successful in building its brand in this manner.
- Croix (Imperial) also provide models in the mid- to low-price range in this category shows that the market is not severely underserved.
Normally, I’d mention them all, but most of them came and gone within a few years, and I’m sorry to say that I can’t recall their names off the top of my head.
Having been browbeaten into submission by their social media presence a few weeks back, I decided to purchase one of their “Midnight Special” fishing rods.
- I really enjoy this rod for a variety of reasons.
Finished in a matte manner…
Is it offensive to compare this to a rod model that was popular a generation ago, or is it a compliment to do so?
- It reminds me of a classic Corvette or a Jeep from the days when Jeeps were still Jeeps, in my opinion.
Let’s be honest: $900 for a fishing pole is a lot of money for most people.
Having said that, I’ve visited a number of fly rod manufacturers and am intimately familiar with the process of making fly rods, so I understand why they are so expensive.
- My experience has taught me, however, that the vast majority of real-world anglers are incapable of telling the difference between a $900 rod and a $300 rod, any more than they are incapable of distinguishing the difference between an inexpensive Timex and a high-end Rolex by holding a watch in their hand while blindfolded.
I enjoy their website, and I like how open and honest they are in their Q & A part.
They clearly fall into the category of those who do not want to spend $900 on a fishing pole.
-
All they need is some more word of mouth and a few of big-hitters to carry some rods, and they might just be able to pull this one off.
The Midnight Special is a very deserving member of the team.
Moonshine Rod Co.
Has anyone have any experience with or heard anything positive or negative about them? I’m considering purchasing one of their eight for redfishing. I’ve heard nothing but positive things about them. However, the most of what I have seen and heard about them has come from folks who received special prices on them in exchange for providing evaluations of the rod at a discounted rate. They’re just another rod producer in the industry. They all purchase graphite rods from China through the Alibabba website and have their company name imprinted on the blanks before shipping them out.
- They generate their money by posting attractive photos on social media and running advertisements, much like any other tiny local businesses.
Most likely, a TFO rod with an excellent guarantee at a comparable price will be more suitable for your purposes.
Their name is only intended to appeal to local markets for the sake of marketing.
- There’s nothing unique about it.
They’re simply stealing you of your money.
“Moonshine” has emerged as a popular catchphrase in the last year or two.
- That makes me laugh.
Most likely, they’ve never ever seen a jar before.
The most recent edit was made at.
- Unless it is directly from them or their “prostaffers,” you don’t hear anything about them.
Scott, Sage, TFO, and so on.
Yes, I get what you’re saying.
- I have a reel that I would like a replacement rod for after breaking the rod that it was originally on.
I despise the phrase moonshine and will not purchase anything that has the word moonshine on it.
Unless the rod was meant to be used at night, referring to a rod company as “moonshine” is simply plain silly.
- Even the actual rural guys who distill likker despise the label moonshine, and they would never sell a quart of their product to anyone who used the term moonshine in their title.
I agree with you.
The names “white likker,” “corn likker,” and “blockade likker” were phrases I frequently heard.
- When it comes to fly rods, I carefully check the warranty information.
However, they do provide you with two helpful hints.
That particular deal is no longer available.
I agree with you.

- What kind of reel do you happen to have?
When I was growing up, I grew up in a family with a long history of distilling and was around by many people who did the same; nonetheless, I never heard the phrase “moonshine” used to describe what they were doing.
This crystal clear substance in the jar is becoming increasingly difficult to come by in my neck of the woods.
- Hatch 7+ is the rating for this reel.
I saw that their major target species appeared to be trout given the rods they had available, so I thought I’d share my findings here.

It’s a good reel.

A friend of mine from high school had a father who couldn’t stop himself from making home distilleries by the barrelful. He made a little time for his extramarital affairs. When his former residence changed ownership multiple times, the full depth of the problem was exposed. Because of the excavation he did underneath the house for his business, there were foundation concerns uncovered during a home inspection, which led to the discovery of the foundation difficulties. Another friend was talking about his adolescent daughter, who was causing him problems.
“You’re absolutely correct,” he remarked with a smile.
